Integer Review

Adding Rule #1 When adding numbers with the same sign: Add the numbers. Keep the sign.

Adding Rules Pos + Pos = Pos EX: 5+5 = 10 Neg + Neg = Neg

Adding Rule #2 (Neg + Pos or Pos + Neg) When adding numbers with different signs: Subtract the smaller number from the larger number. Look for the highest absolute value and keep that sign. Note: Absolute value is the distance a number is from zero on a number line.

Examples -15 + 18 = 25 + -30 = -45 + -35 + 12 =

Subtraction Rules Changing Subtraction to Addition When there is only one ‘-’, change it to ‘+ -’ first. When 2 ‘-’ signs are next to each other change them to a ‘+’ first. Then use our adding rules!

Examples 7 - -8 = -10 - -5 = -20 – (-30) - 5 = 8 – 15 -10 - 2

Multiplication and Division Rules First ignore the signs and do the work! Then… When the signs are the same the answer is + When the signs are different the answer is -

Examples -2∙-5 = 20/-4 = -2∙5 = -20/-4 =
