Sharing with Joy January 22

Be honest, now … What do you like so much that you’d rather not share? Today we look at Paul’s opportunity to share the Gospel message, even though in prison. He found that he (and we) can share Christ with joy no matter what.

Listen for effects of Paul’s bondage. Philippians 1:12-14 (NIV) Now I want you to know, brothers, that what has happened to me has really served to advance the gospel. 13 As a result, it has become clear throughout the whole palace guard

Listen for effects of Paul’s bondage. and to everyone else that I am in chains for Christ. 14 Because of my chains, most of the brothers in the Lord have been encouraged to speak the word of God more courageously and fearlessly.

Joy Despite Hardships How was Paul’s ministry affected by his bondage? How did Paul’s notoriety work to his advantage? When have you been encouraged by the faith and perseverance of others?

Joy Despite Hardships Why do we sometimes see our circumstances as a hindrance rather than an opportunity? How does God sometimes work bad for good in our lives (despite our doubts and confusion)?

Listen for more trouble for Paul. Philippians 1:15-19 (NIV) It is true that some preach Christ out of envy and rivalry, but others out of goodwill. 16 The latter do so in love, knowing that I am put here for the defense of the gospel. 17 The former preach Christ out of selfish ambition, not sincerely, supposing that they can stir up trouble for me while I am in chains.

Listen for more trouble for Paul. But what does it matter? The important thing is that in every way, whether from false motives or true, Christ is preached. And because of this I rejoice. Yes, and I will continue to rejoice, 19 for I know that through your prayers and the help given by the Spirit of Jesus Christ, what has happened to me will turn out for my deliverance.

Joy Despite Critics What two groups of people were preaching the Gospel? Why would some people preach Christ out of envy and rivalry? What motivated those who preached out of good will?

Joy Despite Critics What made Paul rejoice? What do these verses teach us about sharing Christ? What are the basic elements of the gospel message?

Joy Despite Critics What two things did Paul rely on in his work of communicating this message and while in prison? Why should Christians enlist others to pray? How can believers’ prayer for one another advance the Kingdom, the Rule of God? Remember that missionaries, pastors, and even Sunday School teachers depend on the prayers of God's people

Listen for Paul’s expectations. Philippians 1:20-21 (NIV) I eagerly expect and hope that I will in no way be ashamed, but will have sufficient courage so that now as always Christ will be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death. 21 For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.

Joy in Life or in Death What were some of Paul’s expectations and hopes? What was Paul’s claim in verse 21? Why do we sometimes reverse this attitude … “to live is to achieve gain, to die is to see Christ”? What is wrong with this?

Joy in Life or in Death So what do you think Paul meant when he said, “to live is Christ”? How, then was death in any way “gain”?

Application Treasure Jesus above everything else. Take a few moments to repent of desiring other things more than the Savior. Ask the Father to wean you off the pleasures of sin and this world and deepen your desire to know Jesus more.

Application Pray for people you don’t ordinarily pray for. Think about your critics, attackers, or enemies, people you envy. Think about people in other churches. Pray for them to know Christ, and to make Christ known.

Application Reach out to people who need to hear the gospel. Identify others you know who need the gospel. Pray for them, and find a way this week to share the gospel with them. Ask the Father to fill you with joy and confidence in sharing Christ this week.
