The Art of Collage

What is a collage? Collage is a twentieth century form of art. From the French term for 'to glue’, it is art created from a variety of flat materials (more or less) and objects that are glued to another surface. The objects are often painted or drawn upon to bring the work together.

George Braque created the first collage in 1909. Georges Braque. Fruit Dish and Glass, 1912

He began by using everyday materials such as newspapers and magazines. George Braque. The Violin, 1914

Georges Braque. Still Life on a Table: “Gillette”, 1914

Later, other artists like Pablo Picasso started making collages. One of Picasso’s favorite materials to use was sheet music. Pablo Picasso. Guitar, Sheet Music, Glass,1912

Juan Gris. Glasses, Newspaper and a Bottle of Wine, 1913

Gino Severini. Playing Cards and Flask, c. 1912 Some artists liked the way these collages looked so much that they tried to copy the look in painting. Sometimes it became difficult to tell the difference between real collage and simulated collage. Gino Severini. Playing Cards and Flask, c. 1912
