The Group of Seven BY: Rudi and Daniel 6-100

Facts about the group of seven The group of seven are famous painters. The group of seven held their first show in the year 1920 and held their last show in 1932. The group of seven`s paintings were so strong that they changed the way Canadians thought more about art. The group of seven`s paintings hang in art galleries today. They also have their arts on calendars, postage stamps and books.

Some more facts on the group of seven. Not every one liked their paintings at the start but when they got more popular they were famous around Canada. Over the years more people wanted to join the group of seven the last new member was Winnipeg's L.L Fitzgerald he was known as the prairie painter.

Edwin Holgate Born in Allandale, Ontario, Edwin Holgate was raised in Montreal, Québec after his family moved there around the turn of the century. Holgate began studying art at an early age In 1925, Edwin Holgate played an instrumental role in the founding of the Canadian Society of Graphic Artists.He was 85 when he died. (1892-1977)

Frank Johnston Frank Johnston was born in Toronto, Ontario. Like many other Group members, he joined Grip Ltd. as a commercial artist. He participated in the 1920 exhibition, but by 1921 had left Toronto to become principal at the Winnipeg School of Art in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Frank Johnston was 81 when he died. (1888-1949)

J.E.H. MacDonald Born in Durham, England, J.E.H. MacDonald moved to Canada in 1887 with his English mother and Canadian father. He studied at the Hamilton Art School and the Central Ontario School of Art and Design, in Toronto, Ontario.

Lawren Harris Born in Brantford, Ontario, Lawren Harris enjoyed much privilege in his youth. This enabled him to concentrate on his painting. At the age of nineteen he travelled to Germany, where he studied for three years. He returned home to serve in the army and taught musketry at Camp Borden, Ontario.

F.H Varley F.H Varley was born in England. Frederick Horsman Varley first studied art at the Sheffield School of Art.He was 88 when he died. (1881-1969)

Tom Thomas Tom Thomas was born near Claremont, Ontario. He was the youngest out of six children and he grew up in Leith. He played the violin and the mandolin. He was born on the year of 1877. He died in the year of 1917.He was 40 when he died.  

A.J Casson A.J Casson was born in Toronto, Ontario. He took art classes. His first paintings were in water colours.A.J.Casson was 94 when he died. (1898-1992)

Franklin Carmichaels He was born in Orillia, Ontario, Carmichael worked in his father’s shop. Working on the scrolled decorations of the carriages, he practiced his design, drawing and colouring skills. In 1911, his interest in art took him to Toronto, where he studied art at the Central Technical School and the Ontario College of Art. Carmichael spent twenty-one years of his life working as a commercial artist and designer, and the remaining fourteen years of his career teaching its methods to others.he was 55 when he died.
