In-Service Training Blues: Beating the In-Service Training Blues: Tools and Tips Michigan CASA Conference November 10, 2016

What are some of your frustrations with in-Service Training?

What do the NCASA Standards say? 7. C. Volunteer Training 1. The CASA/GAL program delivers training to volunteers using the National CASA/GAL Volunteer Training Curriculum or its equivalent. The purpose of the training is to increase the knowledge, skills and abilities of volunteers so that they can fulfill the roles and responsibilities of a CASA/GAL volunteer. 2. The training consists of at least 30 hours of required pre-service training and 12 hours of required in-service training per year. The number of in- service training hours required for newly trained volunteers will be adjusted (or prorated) dependent on the time of year the volunteer is trained.   9. In-service training opportunities must include, but are not limited to, cultural competency, disproportionality, disparity in outcome training, and recognizing abuse.

an opportunity for a fresh start…

What’s are your program’s requirements for In-service training? A volunteer must complete 12 hours/year. Content? Format? Requirements to verify? Percent of time allowed “other than in class”? How are volunteers informed?

The Pro’s… Don't instruct – facilitate! Plan, plan, prepare Allow for choice Don’t squeeze in too much Start and end on time

The Pro’s… 6. Build on existing expertise 7. Treat adult learners like adults 8. Attend to the environment 9. Ask for feedback 10. Celebrate

Practice what we preach… Evaluation What did you learn? What worked for you? What didn't work for you? What questions or concerns do you have? Is there anything else you want me to know about your experience today? Celebration! Thank you all for sharing your gifts today. As my parting gift, I give you one of my favorite quotes to share with your advocates this season…

Those who can do. Those who can do more volunteer.
