Sleep Apnea Is a sleep disorder in which a person’s breathing is irregular, or pauses while sleeping. Megan Murray and Katie Fulton

What is Sleep Apnea? Breathing is interrupted by a block to the airflow causing an apnea which is a pause in breathing that can happen five to thirty times in an hour and can last anywhere from seconds to minutes.

Fatigue and day time sleepiness Symptoms Snoring Fatigue and day time sleepiness Impaired vision Slower reaction time

How its Tested Polysomnography: a formal sleep study that records biophysiological changes in sleep Its monitors brain activity, eye movement, skeletal muscle activity, and heart rhythm.

Treatment Behavioral therapy Sleeping on one side Automatic Positive Air Pressure Device (APAP) Oral Appliance Therapy (OAT) Surgical treatment: Correction of nasal passages and pharyngeal obstruction. Surgery is based on individual needs.

APAP Automatic Positive Air Pressure Device It is a mask with a tube attached to a CPAP (Continuous Positive Air Pressure Device) machine. Splints/opens the patients airway to allow pressurized air into the throat allowing them to breathe easier.

OAT Oral Appliance Therapy An implant recommended by dentists, which shifts the lower jaw forward opening the airway.

Who it Effects Affects mainly older people, but sometimes can affect children with enlarged tonsils, and is common in overweight people.
