EARLY LEARNING LINKAGES Winter Workshop 2011 Math and More

MATH AND MORE Welcome Mini – Early Math Matters Breakout Sessions Closing and Evaluations Thank you Dr. Mendoza and also Laurie and the LRE staff for letting us use your school. So happy all here Hope enjoyed dinner had a chance to chat, meet and grab resources A few housekeeping things: will be in gym for first part of workshop – then we will move to breakout sessions breakout session descriptions in your folders. We chose topics that connected math to other domains,

EARLY MATH MATTERS What matters most? Foundational skills Social emotional resilience Patterns of engagement Can’t just choose one…

EARLY MATH MATTERS Why? Children’s natural interest and abilities Complex understanding Sequential development Adult’s comfort level with math Early math skills are an important predictor of later math….and literacy skills Sequence of development when children explore different objects – recognize similarities and differences when notice similarities and differences – they can classify when they can classify – they can notice similarities and differences well enough to recognize patterns when they can recognize patterns – they can copy, extend and create patterns they can copy, extend and create patterns – they can match objects one to one when they can one to one - they can compare sets , more and less when they can compare sets – they can see the manyness in a set and get number concepts

WHAT WORKS? Language Balance Children’s natural interests and abilities Connect across other domains Deep and sustained interaction Known relationships and sequences of ideas Observe, document and share progress Individualize instruction to child’s needs

WHAT CAN WE DO? Adults can enhance children’s mathematical development by: Providing environments rich in language Encouraging thinking Valuing uniqueness Supporting exploration And most importantly… Knowing what children can learn and are able to do

MATH’S BIG IDEAS Number Operations Algebra Geometry Measurement Data

QUICK WAYS TO MAKE MATH MEANINGFUL AND FUN! Dice Math throughout the day Add math to: Dramatic Play Sensory table Block Area Writing Area Library What else?
