A few etiquettes of note taking Listen to what is being said first and then write down the key point ONLY. Give attention to the teacher. Do not spend most of your time writing. If you missed a point, put your hand up.

Food glorious food Why is Mr Lion so sad? Allah says in the Qur’an “Eat and drink, but avoid excess.” Why is Mr Lion so sad? Lion (king of the jungle) raw meat, 3 times a day. Allah has blessed us with so many different types of food, that we can enjoy.

Allah asks us to stay away from only a few BUT!!!! Pig (pork, bacon, sausages, gelatine etc.) Blood Unlawfully sacrificed meat WHY??? 1) To test us. 2) For our physical & spiritual benefit. Human meat Alcohol

Sweets AKA (Confectionery) Due to advances in sugar production and the invention of sugar refineries, this led to the production of early sweets by the Muslims.

Ice cream Muslims were the first to use milk as a major ingredient in the production of ice cream. It was produced from milk or cream, often with some yogurt, and was flavoured with rosewater, dried fruits and nuts.

A Food problem? In gatherings, all the food would be brought and eaten at once. This caused dietary/health problems. So an Iraqi Muslim called Ziryab suggested an idea.

What solution do you think he came up with ??? Do you still remember his name?

3 course meals The earliest restaurants came into existence throughout the Islamic world from the 10th century. Restaurants in Islamic Spain served three-course meals.

Sherbet/Juice/Soft drink Sherbet= a cooling drink of sweet diluted fruit juices Juices of crushed fruit, herbs, or flowers has long existed as one of the most popular beverages of the Muslim world. The names have changed over times. Lime Sherbet *Dilute= Reduced strength of a liquid. (less concentrated)

Citrus fruits The Muslims introduced citrus to Europe (fruits like oranges and lemons) which had mainly been grown in India and China before this time. People began growing and eating more This may have helped a lot with getting enough Vitamin C. Orange, lemon, lime, grapefruit, kumquat, pomelo and MANY MORE…

Other fruits and vegetables introduced to Europe by Muslims Bananas Rice Plums Apricots

Artichoke Aubergines Saffron sugarcane.

8 were mentioned. How many can you remember?

Summary: Can you remember the 5 food contributions of the Muslims, in order! 1) Sweets 2) Ice cream 3) 3 course meals 4) Sherbet/juices 5) Citrus fruits

OF COFEE ARE DRUNK WORLDWIDE 1.6 BILLION CUPS OF COFEE ARE DRUNK WORLDWIDE

Why were the Muslims so successful? They fixed their relationship with Allah, so Allah fixed their relationship with everything else. Perfect your deen, then Allah perfects everything else. The Prophet (s.a.w) said “If leaders do not govern according to the book of Allah, you should realize this will not happen without Allah making them into groups and making them fight another” (Ibn Majah)

Conclusion There are off course many more contributions Muslims made (in terms of food). But here were only some of the them. The next time you eat, think creatively, who knows, you may just come up with another invention.
