Theme The theme is the life lesson that the author wants you to understand when you finish reading the story. The theme is a full sentence. It is not specific to the story. What are some possible themes? Vengeance can drive individuals to perform extreme acts.
Conflict What is the main conflict in the story? Man vs. Man What external conflicts did Montressor avoid through his planning? He freed his home of servants. He attached a padlock and chain to the granite wall. He hid the trowel in his cloak. He moved the bones and hid bricks ahead of time. He chose a setting that would minimize the risk of being caught.
Irony and Sarcasm Types of Irony- Dramatic Irony- the audience knows something the characters do not. ex. We know that Montressor is angry with Fortunato and that he is seeking revenge. Fortunato does not know this. Verbal Irony- Sarcasm ex. When Montressor drinks to “Fortunato’s long life.” When Montressor makes ironic comments like warning Fortunato about the air in the catacombs. Situational Irony- A contrast between what the audience expects and what actually happens. ex. You don’t expect a murder to happen in the middle of Carnival!
Foreshadowing Hinting about something to come. Montressor’s coat of arms and motto. The trowel and conversation about the Masons. The setting. No attendants at home. “I shall not die of a cough”
Diction/ Deciphering Difficult Word Order “A wrong is unredressed when retribution overtakes its redresser. It is equally unredressed when the avenger fails to make himself felt as such to him who has done the wrong.” What does this mean? unredressed= not set right retribution= repayment avenger= one who takes revenge “The noise lasted for several minutes, during which, that I might hearken to it with the more satisfaction, I ceased my labours and sat down upon the bones.” What does this lead us to infer about Montressor?
Characterization We can learn about characters in two ways. Direct- We learn about them based on something we are told about them. ex. “He prided himself on his connoisseurship in wine.” Indirect- Things we learn based on characters based on thoughts, speech (dialogue), actions, and what others have to say about the character. ex. “A moment more and I had fettered him to the granite…From one of these depended a short chain, from the other a padlock. Throwing the links about his waist, it was but the work of a few seconds to secure it.”
