Presentation transcript:

Biogenesis vs. Spontaneous Generation Spontaneous Generation- Life apears spontaneously. Biogenesis- Life generates from life. Which is True?

Developing a Controlled Experiment Does Life Just Appear Out of Nowhere? Developing a Controlled Experiment

What is involved in generating a controlled experiment? Identify the problem/question you are trying to solve. Does life spontaneously arise? Let’s see if bacteria will just grow on these plates spontaneously. Identify Variables-things that may change your results. Controlled Variable-unchanging, serves as the basis of comparison. Petri plate, temperature of incubator, Manipulated Variable-variable that is deliberately changed. Responding Variable-changes in response to manipulated variable. To swab or not to swab…That is the question.

What would you see? Swabbed with bacteria Not swabbed with bacteria

Redi’s Experiment with Spontaneous Generation

What were his controlled variables? Type of jars, temp, meat What were his manipulated variable? GAUZE What was the responding variable? The Appearance of maggots

So, What Makes Something Alive Anyways???
