10 DESIGN PRINCIPLES Emphasis IS The part of your design that catches the eye using contrast, size, color, texture, shape

10 DESIGN PRINCIPLES Proximity/alignment proximity creates visual unity in a design by placing elements that are related close to one another. It Guides the viewer through your design from beginning to end by organizing and grouping related items to create a focal point of interest. WITH ALIGNMENT, EVERY ELEMENT IN A DESIGN IS VISUALLY CONNECTED TO ANOTHER ELEMENT. NOTHING FEELS OUT OF PLACE OR DISCONNECTED. IT MINIMIZES VISUAL CLUTTER AND EMPHASIZES ORGANIZATION IN YOUR DESIGN SO YOUR VIEWER UNDERSTANDS WHAT YOU ARE TRYING TO SAY.

10 DESIGN PRINCIPLES Balance IS THE Distribution of the visual weight and importance of objects, colors, texture and space. Elements of your design should be balanced to make it feel stable. Balance Can be symmetrical or asymmetrical, as long as it feels balanced.

10 DESIGN PRINCIPLES Hierarchy IS The order in which the elements within a composition are viewed by the eye. We can call it the order of importance -- where does the eye look first, where does the eye look second, and where does the eye look third?

10 DESIGN PRINCIPLES scale IS The size of an object in relation to another object. IT Can be used to create contrast in your design.

10 DESIGN PRINCIPLES Harmony/unity IS A feeling OF COHESION between all parts of the design, creating a sense of completeness.

pattern IS A Repeating of an object or symbol throughout the art. 10 DESIGN PRINCIPLES pattern IS A Repeating of an object or symbol throughout the art.

10 DESIGN PRINCIPLES Repetition IS Using repeated elements of design throughout the art to create unity within the whole piece. REPETITION Works with pattern to make the art feel active. Using a variety of different elements in your design holds your viewer’s attention and guides their eye through and around the work of art.

10 DESIGN PRINCIPLES Rhythm/movement IS A Path the viewer’s eye takes through the work of art, often to focal areas. Movement can be followed along lines, edges, shape and color. Rhythm is created when elements are repeated to create a feeling of organized movement like music or dancing.
