Federico Antinori Riunione di gruppo 24 giugno 2013 News from CERN Federico Antinori Riunione di gruppo 24 giugno 2013 FA - MB - 20 June 2013

ALICE Physics Week Grazie a tutti! a great success the best ever, in my opinion very positive feedback from across collaboration Grazie a tutti! FA - MB - 20 June 2013

pA update quick summary (see talks presented at Physics Forum for more) double ridge discovered by ALICE (& ATLAS) is now confirmed by CMS, too jury still out about origin of long range correlations id particle spectra reminiscent of flow p/π, Λ/K0 (K/π, less pronounced) vs pT different from pp, similar to ~ 70% Pb-Pb fair description by hydrodynamics models Bozek & Co, EPOS id particle correlations “central”-“peripheral”  v2 substantial Pb-Pb-like split between p and π, K in residual v2 <pT> CGC-inspired scaling recently suggested by Mc Lerran et al, apparently violated role of colour-reconnection? FA - MB - 20 June 2013

pA update (cont’d) discrepancy with LHCb on J/ψ dσ/dy in p-Pb papers: LHC prel < ALICE prel; ~ 20-30% in p-Pb, ~ 15-20% in Pb-p contact with LHCb established at PC and PWG levels  regular meetings confidential: new PID analysis by LHCb  cross-sections up now agreement in Pb-p, but still some residual discrepancy in p-Pb still reviewing the pp references we intend to openly discuss our timeline to arXiv with LHCb colleagues papers: <pT>: to second round last week id particle correlations: at first round id particle spectra: first round this week J/ψ: to first round next week centrality: biases finally under control? cross-check with W µ possible? pushing… FA - MB - 20 June 2013

Summer approval session ~ 30 new results up for approval SQM, EPS, … previews last week status globally good, but with a few “yellow” lights poor attendance by MB members… approvals in week 1/7 mostly “binary” (yes/no) iteration FA - MB - 20 June 2013

Collaboration news Spokesperson: CB chair New coordinators: Search Committee communicates only one available candidate (Paolo Giubellino) CB chair election in October candidatures will be communicated at July CB New coordinators: PWG-HF: Ralf Averbeck (GSI) takes over from Philippe Crochet (Clermont-Ferrand) PWG-PP: Cvetan Cheshkov (Lyon) takes over from Dariusz Miskowiec (GSI) Run Coordinator: Federico Ronchetti (Frascati) from Gilda Scioli (Bologna) Electronics Coordinator: Alex Kluge (CERN) from Luciano Musa (CERN) Trigger Coordinator: Ken Oyama (Heidelberg) extended for the rest of 2013 Service Tasks: from now on, every PhD student in ALICE must fulfill ST obligation (6 months EQ) list of task from detector projects, PWGs, etc. available FA - MB - 20 June 2013

New Institutes Full members: Associate members: New candidatures NISER (Bhubaneswar, India) (Bedangadas Mohanty: Physics Analysis) Inha University (Incheon, Korea) (Min Jung Kweon: ITS upgrade, Analysis) Associate members: Konkuk University (Korea) (Sunkun Oh: muons, Physics Analysis) New candidatures Liverpool University (Marielle Chartier: Physics Analysis) LIPI (Indonesian Institute of Science) (GEM, computing) Other Discussions: Chinese, Austrian, German institutes FA - MB - 20 June 2013

Discussions on Run 2 started discussion with LHCC on Run 2 strategy current assumptions operating luminosities in ALICE: Pb-Pb: 8 kHz (1027 cm-2 s-1) pp (rare): 500 kHz (5 1030 cm-2 s-1) pp (min bias): 10-20 kHz (1-2 1029 cm-2 s-1) p-Pb (rare): 200 kHz (1029 cm-2 s-1) p-Pb (min bias): 10-20 kHz (0.5-1 1028 cm-2 s-1) other: possibly, some pp running at corresponding Pb-Pb, p-Pb energy 25% stable beams rare data taking: 20% DT speed-up of TPC readout p-Pb energy to be decided FA - LHCC Referees - 11 June 2013

Main goals for Run 2 pp: p-Pb Pb-Pb: reach approved target of 1/nb increase unbiased sample pp: reference sample for 1/nb Pb-Pb increase reference unbiased sample p-Pb enlarge data sample (especially unbiased) FA - LHCC Referees - 11 June 2013

Possible scenario pp Pb-Pb 8 weeks combined rare/min bias: reach approved target of 1/nb for rare triggers increase unbiased (centrality, min bias) sample 8 weeks combined rare/min bias: ~ 1/nb ~ 100 M central (x 3 current) ~ 100 M min bias (x 10 current) pp reference rare trigger sample for 1/nb Pb-Pb increase reference unbiased sample 48 weeks rare: 60/pb (1.5 equivalent int lumi of 1/nb Pb-Pb  not dominant in uncertainty) 24 weeks min bias 10 G events  better significance than Pb-Pb for D0 FA - LHCC Referees - 11 June 2013

Possible scenario (cont’d) p-Pb: enlarge data sample (especially unbiased) precise unbiased/rare mix depending on results on 2013 data e.g.: 4 weeks min bias 1 G events (x10 current) would ~ match pp significance for D0 FA - LHCC Referees - 11 June 2013

Run 2 – Current Outlook Year System Luminosity 2015 pp – min bias (24 weeks) 1-2 1029 cm-2s-1 Pb Pb – 4 weeks 1027 cm-2s-1 - leveled 2016 pp – rare triggers (24 weeks) 5-10 1030 cm-2s-1 2017 p Pb – min bias (2 weeks) 0.5-1 1028 cm-2s-1 - leveled p Pb – rare triggers (2 weeks) 1 1029 cm-2s-1 - leveled 2018 LS 2 N.B. the quality of ALICE PbPb measurements relies on accumulating the same nucleon-nucleon luminosity in pp-collisions at the same time no other ions foreseen FA - LHCC Referees - 11 June 2013

Upgrades General: Muon Forward Tracker: discussions continuing with LHCC after endorsement of Central Barrel Upgrade machine issues (pp running, dispersion suppressors, kicker magnet) Muon Forward Tracker: draft LOI received quite well by LHCC referees submission delayed in order to incorporate referees’ comments ECFA Workshop on LHC in the 2020s (1-3/10) ALICE Fully Participating Andrea Dainese in the Preparatory Group on Physics Goals FA - MB - 20 June 2013
