Research Grants – Industry Thanks Why I am here today … Complement the other talks – see BPU or AARM for funding opportunities Dr. Ben Clegg, Operations and Information Management, ABS

Winning industry based research projects Attracting and vetting an organisation / industry partner Get out of the office more Sell organisational benefits, not academic theory Focus on a project What, when? Who else (the team of people, co-funders)? Set expectations More than just aim and objectives We don’t work for nothing! Write a ‘warranty’ (i.e. the proposal) Not a research paper Keep the philosophy out of it, and have a clean ‘n’ simple method Details without confusion Can someone understand the main idea in 5 minutes – “elevator pitch” Don’t answer the problem in the proposal! Attracting – self, group and university marketing 1 website 2. Professional societies 3. Go to trade events (not academic ones) Vetting – are they serious, do they have any money. Test them. Give them a ‘VALUE PROPOSITION’. I will do this for you and it will cost this. If they don’t come back to you they weren’t serious in the first place … Focus – making it real. You might have shared interests, and a nice chat, but don’t start working for them unless you have a project defined (even if it is pro bono). What it going to be done, when do we do it. Do we need a third party (e.g. funding council). Set expectations - More than just aim and objectives - Working patterns. What each wants (academic - data and publications) organisation (resources, learning, objectivism, experience, brand)

Managing industry based research projects Hire dedicated resources people, yourself and other resources Motivate Know each others’ personal / organisational agendas Teams and individuals Regular meetings (‘face-to-face’ or ‘virtual’) Deliver (against your ‘warranty’) Milestone and objectives The ‘spirit’ of the collaboration Deliver before the end Cases within cases Events (e.g. seminars) and varied outputs (Press, on-line videos) Write-up as you go Company reports Literature review → conference paper → journal paper

An example of 3-way benefits: Knowledge Transfer Partnership project
