Wir gehen ins Kino. (in das, akkusativ) We are going to the movies/cinema. (motion towards) Wir sind im Kino. (in dem, dativ) We are at the movies/cinema. (location) Legen Sie das Buch auf den Tisch! (akkusative command form) Put/Lay the book on the table. (motion towards) Das Buch liegt auf dem Tisch. (dativ) The book is lying on the table. (location) Bewegung (Motion AKKUSATIV) vs. Lage (Location DATIV) The verb indicates motion or location.

The indirect object is in red. I gave the book to him. Ich habe ihm das Buch gegeben. I give a book to the boy. Ich gebe dem Jungen ein Buch. to him = ihm to the = dem

Dativfragewörter! Wem sagt er die Zeit? To whom is he telling the time? Wem gibt sie die Bordkarte? To whom is she giving the boarding pass? Wem bringt er das Eis? To whom is he bringing the ice cream?

These prepositions always govern the Dativ : Aus – from, out of Außer… – except for, besides Bei – at, near Mit – with, by Nach – after, to Seit – since (time), for Von – by, from Zu – at, to Gegenüber – across from, opposite (can go before or after the object)
