Outline What is a bad presentation The idea of a presentation Preparing your presentation Rehearse Giving your presentation Evaluation

What makes a presentation bad?

When planning a presentation, pay attention to Material Organization/structure Relationship with the audience How you are feeling

The idea of a presentation A presentation must be given for the audience not to the audience. Topic, brief, setting Communication Message

Ingredients for a successful presentation The presenter has clear goals and objectives The presenter establishes rapport with the audience The presenter has a commitment to getting the message across

Presentations versus writings Pace and speed a presentation is set by the presenter, when you read, you do that at your own speed. You don’t have the opportunity to ”re-read” a complicated sentence in a presentation. A presentation is not just writing an essay and reading it to the audience.

Preparing the presentation Don’t ”overread” – be selective, learn to scan literature When you find something that might be interesting, stick a Post it and read it when you are done with your search. Make a list of key-word or key-concepts that you must address during your presentation

Preparing the presentation Find a structure for your presentation Summary of the publications – weaker approach Themes – stronger approach, shows that you have analysed and understood the publications and put them into a context. Your script must be conversational and audience friendly.

What is your objective? Provide information on a topic Present existing knowledge on a topic Suggest ideas for future research

Make your message memorable How you start is important Show that you are engaged with the topic Tell a story Give your audience an agenda Repeat important points Neat closing – connect full circle

Handout Outline of the presentation Neat and simple – 1 (max 2 fonts) Space between paragraphs

Prompts Index cards Script Notes Annotated printouts

Preparing for the presentation It IS a god idea to rehearse your presentation You will be able to do the presentation without thinking It is a great help to do present to someone
