Essential Question What are accommodations and modifications? When should accommodations and modifications be used and what do they mean? Who is responsible for accommodations and modifications? aiken county public school district

Meeting Outcomes As a result of attending this meeting, participants will be able to… Define accommodation and modification Describe when and how accommodations and modifications should be used. Provide examples of accommodations and modifications aiken county public school district

Norms Be present Use technology appropriately Be respectful of others aiken county public school district

Introductions Name School What you teach One interesting fact about yourself aiken county public school district

What are Accommodations? aiken county public school district

What are Accommodations? Allows a student to complete the same assignment or test as other students, but with a change in the timing, formatting, setting, scheduling, response and/or presentation. aiken county public school district

More examples of Accommodations A student who is blind can take a Braille version of a test Take a test alone in a quiet room Small group or individual testing Copy of notes Go over directions orally Permit extended time to complete tests Allow oral responses (for tests that don’t measure reading or writing) Divide tests into small sections of similar questions and problems Provide a sample or practice test aiken county public school district

When does a teacher use accommodations? IEP document 504 plans Note: The team leader/case manager for students with IEPs and 504 plans MUST give copies to any teacher that works with that student. aiken county public school district

History Accommodation Example Gen. Ed. Assignment Your general education 6th grade class has a vocabulary quiz on medieval Europe. Accommodation https://quizlet.com/79712751/medieval-europe-with-pictures-flash-cards/ This provides visual and auditory study materials for students with disabilities. For the assessment, students could orally state the definition of each vocabulary word which is presented along with a picture. aiken county public school district

Group/Partner Work Discuss with your group or a partner what kind of class you teach What accommodations do you use in your classroom? What works well? Write some examples/ideas on the paper provided aiken county public school district

What are Modifications? Changes that allow access to the general curriculum, NOT providing a completely different set of expectations and standards aiken county public school district

aiken county public school district

Examples of Modifications a student completing work on part of a standard, or a student completing an alternate assignment that is more easily achievable than the original assignment Reduced vocabulary by half Reduced answer choices Graded on a different rubric…reduced project expectations Use recognition tests (true-false, multiple choice, or matching) instead of essays Provide the first letter of the missing word or use of Word Banks Allow take-home or open-book tests Provide a vocabulary list with definitions aiken county public school district

Dangers of Modifications Teachers who modify work for students at an early age could be providing a huge disservice. It is difficult for a student to catch up when assignments and expectations have been reduced. Ultimately, such modifications can result in no change for a diploma. In an IEP, such modifications should be clearly written and documented. aiken county public school district

Modifications and High School aiken county public school district

Important Note About Modifications . Modifications = No High School Diploma aiken county public school district

Who is responsible? Everyone!!!!! aiken county public school district

Group/Partner Work Discuss with your group or a partner what kind of class you teach What modifications have you been responsible for in your classroom? Who requires these modifications in your classroom? What works well? Write some examples/ideas on the paper provided aiken county public school district

Things to Remember Be aware that special needs students may not want to be singled out for any special treatment. To do so may identify their disability for other students and cause them to receive some form of attention they may not be able to handle.  Ensure that your attitude and responses to special needs students are identical to those to other students. View all students as contributing students.  Consider learning over a long period of time. Special needs students may require extended periods of time to master a concept or learn a specific skill. You may need to repeat information several times and reinforce it in many ways.  aiken county public school district

Things to Remember It is quite easy to fall into the trap of focusing on the weaknesses of special needs students. Yet it is vitally important that you be aware of and seek to identify the individual strengths of each and every student in your classroom.  Help students understand that grading, evaluation, and assessment is based on identifiable objectives in accordance with individual potential. Evaluation should not be coupled with the limitations of students but rather to their expectations.  Provide significant opportunities for students of all abilities to learn from each other. Structure a variety of learning activities in which the social climate of the classroom is both promoted and enhanced. It is important that everyone feels like he or she is contributing.  Do not make inappropriate assumptions based on students' exceptionalities. For example, don't assume that a student who is confined to a wheelchair is an unhappy child. Don't assume that a learning disabled student is not gifted in the visual arts. Also, don't assume that children with disabilities are disabled in all areas.  aiken county public school district

Examples of Modifications See examples of hard copies of activities that have been modified aiken county public school district
