Inscribed and Circumscribed Figures

Goals: Define “Inscribed” Define “Circumscribed” Apply and test our definitions!

Define: Inscribed A circle inscribed in a triangle A picture inscribed in stone A circle inscribed in a triangle A quadrialteral inscribed in a circle

Define: Inscribed The word is derived from the Latin word “scribere” – to write or draw. It means to draw something inside something else. In Geometry, it usually means drawing one shape inside another so that it just touches.

Goals: Define “Inscribed” Define “Circumscribed” Apply and test our definitions!

Define: Circumscribed Circle circumscribed by a triangle A quadrilateral circumscribed by a circle

Define: Circumscribed The opposite of inscribed. When a shape is drawn around the outside of another shape, it is called circumscribed – “drawn around”

Goals: Define “Inscribed” Define “Circumscribed” Apply and test our definitions!

Quadrilateral Inscribed in a Circle or A quadrilateral circumscribed by a circle. All four vertices of the quadrilateral are on the circle

Name the figure below: A circle circumscribed by a pentagon A pentagon inscribed in a circle A pentagon circumscribed by a circle A triangle inscribed in a square

Name the figure below: A circle circumscribed by a pentagon A pentagon inscribed in a circle A pentagon circumscribed by a circle A money inscribed in a box

Just a triangle with two vertices on a circle…Why?

Name the figure using “inscribed in” and “circumscribed by” A _________________ inscribed in _________________ A _________________ circumscribed by _________________

How can we name this using “inscribed in” and “circumscribed by”

How would you describe this?

Goals: Define “Inscribed” Define “Circumscribed” Apply and test our definitions!
