Fluent

Fluent Fluent Fluent-adjective Fluently-adverb Able to speak or write easily and smoothly. Roberto is fluent in both Spanish and English. One day I will be able to speak Spanish fluently.

By using the Rosetta Stone software I hope to become fluent in Spanish.

Console

Console Console Verb To comfort; to make someone feel less sad. Brenda’s friends consoled her when her dog died. He consoled himself with a hot fudge sundae after failing his math test.

These softball players are consoling one another after a big loss at the Olympics. Console

Memorabilia

Memorabilia Memorabilia Noun Things worth remembering. O.J. Simpson was sent to prison for stealing sports memorabilia. Our history teacher has all sorts of WWII memorabilia that helps us understand that time period.

This store is devoted entirely to Coca-Cola memorabilia.

Expectorate

Expectorate Expectorate Verb To spit The polite way to say spit is to say expectorate. The dentist asked Molly to expectorate into the sink.

Egotistical Egotistical Adjective Conceited; selfish If you constantly brag people may start to thinking that you are egotistical. Many parents are egotistical about the athletic or academic achievements of their children.

Meager Meager Adjective Small in amount Handing out meager amounts of candy is a good way to get your house toilet papered on Halloween. Alex scoffed at the meager amount of food on his plate.

In the United States this would probably be regarded as a meager amount of food, when really it is a proper portion. Meager

Maternal Maternal Maternal-adjective Maternally-adverb Motherly; having to do with mothers. Lucy has always been maternal, so it was no surprise when she and her husband decided to have children.

This woman is acting in a maternal way towards her baby.

Guffaw

Guffaw Guffaw Noun Verb A loud coarse burst of laughter. The class clown wasn’t happy until he had coaxed a guffaw from the teacher. The teacher finally did guffaw at his lame joke, to shut him up.

The type of laughter where you just can’t help yourself. Guffaw

Amble

Amble Amble verb To walk slowly or leisurely. The teacher was very upset that Eric ambled into her class everyday. With nothing to do the two friends ambled around the neighborhood.

This man is ambling, he doesn’t look like he is in much of a hurry. Amble

Monotonous

Monotonous Monotonous adjective Boring because it’s all the same; unchanging Making 24 vocabulary powerpoints over the summer was a monotonous task. The students couldn’t pay attention in Professor Bin’s class because his voice was so monotonous.

Factory jobs tend to be monotonous-you do the same thing all day, day after day.

Avaricious

Avaricious Avaricious Adjective Greedy The avaricious banker stole all of the family’s money and bought himself a car. Mike is quite avaricious-he’d steal from a baby if he could.

To the avaricious, money is the only thing that matters or that can make them happy.

Gumption Gumption Noun Initiative and courage; “get up and go. It took a lot of gumption for Bill Gates to start his own computer company. Oliver was too short to play basketball, it took a lot of gumption for him to try out anyay.

This woman will not stop practicing until she is her absolute best, that takes gumption.
