Heading maintenance via the GUI Headings There are two ways in ALEPH 500 GUI to update headings: Correct Heading button in the GUI browse Building an Authority Record in the authority library Heading maintenance via the GUI
Correct Heading in GUI Browse Used when there is no desire to make an authority record Librarian does not want end user to be able to arrive to same heading from multiple points Change Publisher Bialic Press to Bialik Press End user will not be able to browse for Bialic Press All cases in all records of 260$$bBialic Press will change to 260$$bBialik Press Heading maintenance via the GUI
Building an authority record Librarian wants end user to be able to arrive to same heading from multiple points Author Smith, Barbara married and changed her name to Jones, Barbara End user must be able to browse by either author and arrive to same records Both authors will appear in list of headings when end user browses Heading maintenance via the GUI
Correct Heading in GUI Browse In cataloging module choose the search tab and browse for heading which you desire to change Here we will change publisher Allyn & Bacon to be Allyn and Bacon (combine second and third entries, so all will have and instead of &) Heading maintenance via the GUI

Building an authority record In the previous cases an end user can browse only for the corrected way in which the publisher appears. There is no reference from the old way to the new way. We will now build an authority record for an author such that an end user can browse for the preferred and non preferred appearance. Heading maintenance via the GUI

Building an authority record We will create an authority record in the Authority library. First we connect to the authority library and then we will create the authority record Connect to authority library Heading maintenance via the GUI
Building an authority record While connected to authority library we can create the authority record. It is common to do so via a template Typically references are made for authors and subjects in the authority library. A set of templates already exists for creating the authority records Heading maintenance via the GUI

Building an authority record We will now do an example of an authority record for subject. We have a subject Islam in the library. Students search for Religion – Islam and do not find anything.
