3 Approaches to Using Arts Education to Achieve Equity Goals Arts in LCFF Arts education as a strategy to enhance student learning, improve school climate, and increase student and parent engagement. Title I Arts National recognition that arts education supports the goals of Title I federal funding stream, targeting the most underserved students. Arts Integration Integrating the arts throughout the curriculum can motivate students to unleash the critical and creative thinking skills central to college and career readiness. http://www.artsed411.org/files/arts.equity.f.pdf

Vetting the Process of Utilizing Arts to Achieve Title I Goals U.S. Federal Title I policy supports using Title I funds for, “arts education to improve the achievement of disadvantaged students.” 2. “Title I funds may be used to fund aspects of arts education if the strategies have been demonstrated to improve student academic achievement in English Language Arts and/or Mathematics. In order to use Title I, Part A funds, a Title I school’s School Site Council (SSC) must develop, review update, and approve the Single Plan for Student Achievement (SPSA), which then must be approved by the local governing board.” –Former Deputy Superintendent Deb Sigman 3. Paul S. Brown, Acting Director, Student Achievement and School Accountability Programs, at the U.S. Department of Education gave assurance that the language provided by CDE (Deb Sigman) is consistent with that of the U.S. Department of Education. http://www.artsed411.org/files/Embracing_Arts_Ed_to_Achieve_Title1_Goals.pdf
