AMSTI Geometry Year 1 Day 1 Do BEES Build it Best? AMSTI Geometry Year 1 Day 1
What does the unit contain? An Overview of IMP Brief descriptions of year 2 of the IMP curriculum A discussion of how the four years fit together Note to students about IMP Information about the components in the unit
Mathematical Content Covered Focuses on a central, organizing question: What is the optimal shape for a honeycomb? In answering this question, students explore content related to: Area and perimeter, including formulas for rectangles, triangles, parallelograms, trapezoids, and regular polygons Pythagorean Theorem Surface area and volume Relationship of area and volume in similar figures Review and extension of right triangle trigonometry Tessellations
Introduction to the Central Question This unit focuses on the honeycomb, the structure in which bees store their honey. The honeycomb is made out of wax and is also used for other purposes, such as laying eggs and raising their young. The general question is: Why do bees build their honeycombs the way they do? Is this the “best” way to build a honeycomb?
Several Assumptions The honeycomb is made out of individual, hollow cells. These cells are made out of wax, which the bees produce. The honey is stored in the cells.
