Civil War Events

Attack on Fort Sumter, SC This attack against the Union soldiers marks the start of the Civil War.

The First Battle of Manassas (Bull Run, VA) The first major battle of the Civil War The Union loses due to the lack of supplies and battle experience.

Emancipation Proclamation The signing of the Emancipation Proclamation made “freeing the slaves” the new focus of the war. Many freed slaves joined the Union army.

Battle of Vicksburg, MS This Union win gave complete control of the Mississippi River (this divided the South in half , therefore they could not work together)

Battle of Gettysburg, PA This battle was the turning point in the war because the Union repelled Robert E. Lee’s invasion.

Surrender at Appomattox, VA Lee surrendered to Grant at Appomattox Court House in 1865 which ended the war.
