What do you think?

Temperature What is the difference between heat and temperature?

Lesson Aims: To be able to order temperatures sensibly from hot to cold. To calibrate thermometers and check accuracy.

Homework due in Friday am Lesson Aims: Read worksheet 8Ia (7) Absolute Zero and answer all the questions in full sentences in your exercise book. Do not write on the sheet please. Alternative HW

Homework due in Friday am Lesson Aims: Cut out the examples and temperatures. Stick the temperatures in order (coldest to hottest) and then match the examples to the temperature. Two are completed below: -89°C Coldest temperature on Earth -20°C -5°C 0°C Melting ice 5° Possible HW

Homework due in Friday am Lesson Aims: Science text book Read section 8I.1 p 118 – 119 Use this information to help you answer questions in section 8I.1 on page 128 Alternative HW

Heat energy and temperature Lesson Aims: Heat energy is measured in Joules (J) If you give an object more heat energy it will get hotter. Temperature is measured in degrees centigrade (°C) If an object gets hotter its temperature will rise.

Understanding heat energy and temperature Lesson Aims: The water in the kettle and the hot water tank are both heated to 60°C. Questions to ask: Which holds a greater mass of water? Which will take longer to heat up (if you had the same power of heater)? Which is hotter? Which holds more heat energy?

Calibrating thermometers Lesson Aims: Aim: To calibrate a thermometer and use it to measure room temperature. Method: Draw a diagram of your apparatus and explain what you are going to do. Results: Measure room temperature with your thermometer and a pre-calibrated thermometer. Conclusion: How accurately have you calibrated your thermometer? What was the difference in readings?

Calibration Lesson Aims: Why is it important to have properly calibrated equipment to take scientific measurements? How could you improve this experiment to have more accurately calibrated thermometers?
