Wind and Weather Data and Preliminary Results

Outline Motivations and Objectives What has been done? Street level wind direction vs. synoptic wind direction Conclusion &Future Work

1. Motivations Objectives: How does the horizontal transport compares with the vertical mixing? How do they relate with the synoptic conditions? Objectives: How does the wind direction at the street level relate to the synoptic wind direction? How does the wind speed at the street level relate to the synoptic wind speed?

2. What has been done? Sonic anemometer measurements at 6 locations at the street level + 2 reference wind speed measurements (AWS + sonic). Complete data check + preliminary analysis for Site 1, Site 2, Site 5 (basement), reference sonic (roof) and reference AWS (roof). data are available as 10min averages on the DAPPLE web site Partial data check for Site 4 (lower and upper) and Site 5 (roof) (Leeds).

3. Street level wind direction vs. synoptic wind direction

Synoptic conditions - AWS, 27/05/2003 to 21/05/2003- Pdf of Synoptic Wind direction Pdf of velocity magnitudes θ x, U y, V ⊙ z, W θ

Synoptic Wind Regime Definition Regime C (SSW wind) 45 <angle<90 Regime B (WSW wind) 0 <angle<+45 Regime A (WNW wind) -45 <angle<0

Synoptic Wind Regimes per day Regime A (WNW) 06/05/2003 08/05/2003 13/05/2003 14/05/2003 Regime C (SSW) 29/04/2003 30/04/2003 01/05/2003 02/05/2003 07/05/2003 12/05/2003 15/05/2003 16/05/2003 19/05/2003 Transitional: A&C 09/05/2003 20/05/2003 21/05/2003 Pdf_wind direction Pdf_wind direction 52 deg -25 deg

Regime A: 06/05/2003 Site 4 WNW winds Pdf_direction_20 Hz data Site 1 -lower- Site 1 Site 2 10 minutes averages

Vortex street canyon? Gloucester street: site 4 lower Pdf_wind magnitude updraft Characteristic for regime A+C

Street wind direction vs. Street wind direction (summary) Regime A Regime C ? ? Channelling effect

4. Conclusions & Future work The horizontal transport seems to be dominated by the channelling effect. The vertical transport might be dominated by street canyon vortex? Street level wind speeds vs. synoptic wind speeds To quantify the vertical transport (Gloucester Place + Marylebone) Leeds anemometers To perform spectral analysis (wavelets analysis?)
