Travel, Trade, and conquest The great European Powers began travelling the seas to trade and create big empires as early as the 15th century

What is this colonization We will look at some countries who were colonized by European powers though the lenses of: Purpose Who were there before Europeans How they educated people (like Indian Residential Schools!) Lasting effects of colonization

India Colonized by Britain over centuries Purpose: First to train the navy, eventually to trade, and finally to take land (land = power) Who was there first?: Indians, with a thriving culture and its own empire

India - Education Education Purpose: To Europeanize them so they will not cost Britain money in the future. Done in day schools, in English and Persian. Taught by Christian Missionaries.

India - Effects Poverty Third World Country Reinforced the Caste System as they didn’t make lasting impression with their teachings (which means hierarchy, so tons of poor people)

USA Colonized by Britain, France, and Spain over centuries Purpose: Settlement (land = power) Who was there first? Aboriginals (Many of the same people who were in Canada)

USA - Education Education: None, or at least not the depth as in Canada. Goal was more to get rid of First Nations people. "Indian Removal Act" and ethnic cleansing – Indians were rounded up and marched to reserves far away.

USA - Effects Very similar to Canada in that FN people who did end up on reserves have most times been treated quite poorly, and have no way to dig themselves out Most reserves are not funded properly and there is great poverty among first nations

Australia Colonized by Britain over centuries Purpose: to Settle (land = power) Who was there first?: Aboriginals, with own thriving culture

Australia - Education Education Purpose: To Europeanize them, teach them English and European ways Tried integration (FN and EU kids in the same schools) and segregation (FN apart from EU). MOST children taken from families for residential school Taught by Christian Missionaries. Some were taught skills (like Canada), some more intellectual education.

Australia - Effects Very similar to Canada – First Nation students still fall behind their counterparts in graduation rate and other stats. This is the most similar to Canada that I've found. Losses similar to Canada – culture, family, etc

ghana Colonized by Britain and Portugal over centuries Purpose: Slave trade: the indigenous in Ghana helped the Europeans collect slaves from the African interior. Then trading Gold, and was good military position Who was there first?: Indigenous groups from various parts of Africa

ghana - Education Education Purpose: To Europeanize them, teach them English and European ways Day schools and residential schools. Taught by Christian Missionaries. Amazingly similar abuse and punishment stories.

ghana - Effects Very similar to Canada – loss of culture, family, ability to parent. Generations of challenges with drugs and alcohol. Working to reclaim culture.

Education of the people (keep in mind their unique nature) and what you hope to achieve What lasting effects your colonization will have on these people. Keep in mind you need to show an understanding of historical problems with colonization: so look at your “same/different” chart
