Protective Crane Design ET 494- Senior Design Spring 2017 Professor: Dr. Chris Koutsougeras Advisor: Dr. Ho-Hoon Lee Katelyn Cockrell Curtis Blank Jared Bush Zane Jacob

Design Goal Design a protective crane to be used for protection against falls. Design and fabricate a sensor and trolley system that will detect the movement of the worker in order to keep the worker directly under the anchor point on the boom of the crane. The crane needs to be fairly mobile for different terrains and to allow the user to move freely. Alex

Our Goals Use the skills learned through this project and our curriculum to become a valuable asset to future employers. Gain a full understanding of project design, planning, and cost estimation. Develop a safe and cost sensitive crane design. Alex

Tasks Completed Last Semester We calculated and configured the overall design of the trailer and crane. We used programs such as COMSOL and AutoCAD Inventor. These programs helped us test our design to ensure everything was working properly.

Spring 2017 Goals Complete full structural analysis of crane structure in COMSOL and Autodesk Inventor. Design redundant locking mechanism for fall arrest. Design a sensor to monitor position of the worker. Successfully design trolley system with active position monitoring capabilities. Fabricate a prototype of the trolley and controls for proof of concept.

Trolley We will design and fabricate a motorized trolley that will move along our I-beam boom The trolley will be controlled by a sensor that identifies the worker’s position. We plan to use a PID loop to control a bidirectional DC motor controller. There will be no brake needed in the trolley, we will use the motor torque to keep the motor static when necessary. Curtis

Locking Mechanism We will study a previous senior design project and incorporate it in our design if it is suitable. It includes a accelerometer to measure the slip, trips and falls. Also includes seatbelt tether which is locked by a solenoid. The program that is used for this is Arduino. We will also design a secondary locking mechanism in case the primary mechanism fails.

Deliverables cont. Construction of entire trolley system prototype Primary member: Jared Bush Secondary member(s): Curtis Blank, Zane Jacob, Katelyn Cockrell Construction of boom prototype Primary member: Katelyn Cockrell Secondary member(s): Curtis Blank, Zane Jacob, Jared Bush

Timeline January: Create proposal. Meet with Dr. Lee to acquire approval for proposed semester’s work. February: Work on COMSOL load analysis. Complete calculations for spring force fall arrest mechanism. Design angle sensor and locking mechanisms. Work on design of trolley. March: Finish prototype for trolley by the end of the month. Begin functionality testing. April: Testing and debugging controls. May: Write final proposal and presentation. Jared
