Biography On April 1, 1908, Samuel and Rose Maslow happily gave birth to their first of seven children, Abraham Harold Maslow. As a teenage Abraham was pushed by his parents for academic success. He studied law at the City College of New York for three semesters before transferring to Cornell. He then returned to CCNY.

Biography He married his first cousin, Bertha Goodman and had two daughters. Maslow and his family moved to Wisconsin so he could attend a local university (University of Wisconsin) to pursue his newly found interest in psychology. He received a BA in 1930, an MA in 1931, and PhD in 1934 all in psychology.

Biography After receiving his diplomas he went on to study human sexuality. He taught full time at Brooklyn College. Abraham Maslow met Kurt Goldstein while serving as the chair of the psychology department. Kurt Goldstein the author of The Organism, inspired Maslow to begin his crusade for a humanistic psychology.

Maslows Theory Abraham set up a hierarchy of humans needs. His theory consists of five levels of basic needs In his theory a person does not escalate to the next need unless the one before is fulfilled. http://kenosisdown2earth.files.wordpress.com/2008/01/maslows_hierarchy_of_needs.png

Physiological Needs Physiological needs are biological needs. These needs consist of oxygen, food, water, shelter, clothing and sleep. This section of needs are the most important.

Safety Needs Safety needs are needs that give us stability, protection and safe circumstances. Children's safety needs include: Protection from their parents and to feel safe in their home. Adults safety needs include: knowing that their family is safe, having a good retirement pension, and insurance.

Love and belonging Love and belonging needs are those that fulfill our relationship and intimate needs. It makes us feel like we belong in this world knowing that we have people that care about us

Self Esteem Self esteem needs is our personal confidence. When our self esteem is high we feel that we belong but when our self esteem is low we feel left out and worthless.

Self-Actualization Self-actualization is a need to be and do what we were meant to do. Ex: If somebody is naturally talented at athletics, and enjoys these activities, this level of needs describes that the person is meant to play sports.

Critic Joan M. Kiel believes that the needs are long overdue and should be revised. Kiel states that Maslow’s theory of hierarchy of human needs is almost fifty years old, and should be edited to reflect today’s world. http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0FCG/is_3_26/ai_62980759/
