Maximize Your Leadership Style If you want to become an effective leader and are not self-motivated you are in trouble. If you want to put more leadership into your style you can do so. It is a do-it-yourself project Your leadership styleis dependent upon many interrelated factors

Basic Approaches to Leadership Direct Approach The leader tells others what is expected of them. Permissive Approach May work well if have responsible self-directing, focused followers. Sees the flowers but not the weeds. May not work very well in the long run.

A Blend of the Approaches The Support Approach A leader, a coach, a good facilitator Supportive leader who praises followers for a job well done. The leader encourages and promotes team involvement. Synergy is maximized. Quality, high standards, and motivation are standard operating procedures. A Blend of the Approaches Most leaders have a blend of approaches.

What do You Think? 10 years ago we had the time & money to conduct in-house training and give new managers a lot of personal help. Today with tighter budgets, all we can do is establish the best possible working environment, provide the tools, & hope they train themselves. Is this realistic? What are the options?

Mentoring Mentors are heroes in our lives They bring a breath of fresh air. Convince others of their own dignity & self-worth. Help us refocus our vision, adjust our range, maintain our balance. Mentoring can be an intense caring relationship to promote both professional & personal growth.

What is a Mentor? Use your own words Who & Why

Who Have You Mentored? List qualities you have to share as a Mentor.

Mentoring Agreements Formal or Informal? For a specific period of time? Scheduled for specific dates & times. Built on trust, listening, respect, confidence & dignity. Provide moral support, guidance, and hope. Confusion, uncertainty, & fear may be a valuable part of growth.

Mentors are guides Warn us of lurking dangers. They are important for both men’s & women’s advancement within an organization. They are especially important at the beginning of a career or at critical turning points in one’s professional career. Recognize that development is more than simply change.

Mentors have power but they never use it against us. They help us grow & develop to be the best that we can be. Mentees sometimes overshadow or overcome the achievements of their mentor. That is the ultimate for a true mentor. Helping others achieve and grow is a tremendous gift. A reward in itself. Mentors help us realize there are few single right answers. You must choose the right approach.

“My mentor helped me see there are a lot of different points of view & that I have to try to make up my own mind. There are no simple right or wrong answers when it comes to dealing with people.” People need to develop an internal sense of self. Don’t need to try to “control” other people or their environment. People begin to view the entire world as “relative”. People make new connections with others.

In this “dog eat dog” world it is important to connect with other people in positive ways that aid in the positive growth and development of other people. You receive pride & joy in helping them be successful & happy. As an artist, you are helping to mold another person in ways which will allow them to expand and prosper. You don’t do it for them but you provide encouragement and a helping hand.
