Quick Survey How many of you are science majors? How many of you are first year students? How many are here mainly to fulfill a science requirement?

This Course: Objectives Basic knowledge about the oceans, their role on the planet and your role as stewards of the oceans. Appreciation for the way science works Appreciation for the extreme INTERCONNECTEDNESS of all things and processes on earth

Subdivisions of ocean science: Marine geology Chemical oceanography Physical oceanography Biological oceanography This is the basic order of topics in this course.

Marine geology: Nature and origin of ocean basins and sediments. Chemical oceanography: Dissolved salts, gases, and nutrient elements in the sea. Physical oceanography: The physical properties and dynamics (currents, waves, tides) of the oceans and seawater. Biological oceanography: Marine organisms and their environments.

Class Format 3 lectures per week 3 exams during the term About 10 On-line quizzes 1 Final Exam 1 Short Paper Web notes Reading assignments
