Analysis in the Content Areas

Our Learning Goal I have a strategy for teaching the thinking skill of analysis I can use a variety of thinking skills and graphic organizers to support students with analysis

With a Partner: What does it mean to analyze something? What’s a situation in which you use the skill of analysis as a teacher? What steps do you go through when you analyze something?

Mr. O’s

Analyze!

A Classroom Example What do you notice about how the skill is scaffolded? What do you notice about the students’ analyses?

Teaching Analysis Directly Name the skill, Define the skill, Relate the skill to life experience Model the strategy & graphic organizer for the skill Practice the skill with familiar content, in small groups Practice the skill in multiple contexts over time What content might you use for teaching and applying the thinking skill of analysis with your students?

More Types of Analysis!

Let’s Practice! 21st Century Work Jigsaw Data: Pictures Practice: Using Thinking Skills graphic organizers to gain insight into the diversity and cultures of 21st Century work 1:40

Analysis Thinking Skills as a Lens

21st Century Work Jigsaw Form Pairs Select a 21st Century Work photo and thinking skill Apply your thinking skill, recording your work on chart paper using a graphic organizer Share in groups 1:45-2:05

Group Sharing: combine 3 pairs In what ways did the analysis thinking skill focus and/or challenge your learning? 2:05-2:15

21st Century Work Jigsaw Process Objective Content Objective What are you learning about analysis thinking skills and graphic organizers? What are you learning about what it means for our students to be Career Ready? 2:15

Reflecting on our learning What? So What? Now What? What I’ve learned about the skill of analysis: Where can students practice analysis in my content? What’s my next step in incorporating analysis with my students? OR, What support would help me?

Reflecting on Analysis Skills Bodies of knowledge are important, of course, but they often become outdated. Thinking skills never become outdated. To the contrary, they enable us to acquire knowledge and to reason with it, regardless of the time or place or the kind of knowledge to which they’re applied. So in my opinion, teaching thinking skills is not only a TALL order but the first order of business for a school. ~ Robert Sternberg
