LO: to understand how to write up your introduction How successful are sustainable approaches at different scales in Katy, Texas, USA Geography coursework LO: to understand how to write up your introduction

Purpose of investigation A definition of the question or issue to be investigated, including the location of the fieldwork investigation.

From the exam board

What are you investigating? State the question Put the question in context of your study What are your aims? Location of investigation  What is the greater Houston area like? What are opportunities/ barriers to sustainability Where are you investigating within Katy– including focused area of study. Include annotated maps showing area investigated e.g. a map locating the whole city (annotate land area, location of the historic downtown, shopping areas, new housing developments, older housing developments and other significant areas of Katy). Locational context – i.e. what is Katy/ Houston like? Make sure this is focused on ideas that would be relevant to explaining sustainability . e.g. size, function, attractions, climate and economic status. Theory: MAKE SURE YOU SOURCE ALL WEBSITES, BOOKS USED FOR YOUR BIBLIOGRAPHY What scales may we study? What are appropriate sustainable EGAN wheel  Sub-questions How are you investigating? What are your 2-3 subsidiary questions, how do they relate to your question? What do you expect to find? (base on theory not prior knowledge of Galveston) REMEMBER YOU HAVE A WORD LIMIT – WE WOULD RECOMMEND 300 WORDS FOR THE INTRODUCTION

Setting the scene…geographical theory

What are sustainable practices? What scales may be considered?

Scales Personal School Local government National government International agreements

Sustainable practices we could study…. Building design Recycling Transport Energy Education Community involvement

Egan Wheel: assessing sustainable communities

Egan Wheel

For each of the following slides discuss a way in which we could investigate this aspect of the Egan Wheel in Katy

Social and cultural A sustainable community is active, inclusive and safe

Governance A sustainable community is well run and everyone participates

Services A sustainable community is well served by schools, hospitals and other public services

Transport and connectivity A sustainable community is well connected with good transport links

Economy A sustainable community has a thriving local economy where people are busy

Environmental A sustainable community is environmentally-friendly

Equity A sustainable community is fair for everyone

Housing and the built environment A sustainable community has well designed buildings and public space

Do we need to investigate all of these strands? Which are the easiest? Which are most relevant to our local area? Which can we collect quality data on?

Locational context Include an annotated map of Houston (show Katy, transport networks, Downtown etc). Annotated map of Katy

MARK SCHEME FOR THE INTRODUCTION

Example of an excellent location map

Hypothesis ideas???

Mrs Bennett and Ms Capper’s ideas for sub-questions Which sustainable practices are the most effective in the Katy area? Which scale (home, school, council etc) has the most impact? Is there more litter where there are more people? Is there more pollution where there are more people? Is there more sustainable practices where there is less development? Are there more sustainable practices in newer areas of Katy? How successful are sustainable approaches at different scales in Katy, Texas, USA

Peer assessment Peer assess the example – what mark would you give it?
