Youth Football Problem Areas Way behind the current trends NO time management Coaches don’t want to be responsible Too many kids standing around Politics

Offensive Line Fundamentals Need a great coach! Typically, your least developed players. Takes time and patience What they do changes every week! Give them a chance for success! Angles / Down Blocking Double Teams / Cross Blocks Always go on 2!!! (reset to draw offsides)

O-Line Plays that can help! Cross Blocks (Louisville) Kids named it X-Factor Down Plays Down, Down, Pull and Kick

Time Management Plan your week in advance. Have a schedule or a check list! List your coaches responsibilities. Put a time limit on drills (10-15 is ideal) Know what your priorities are each day.

Individual Periods Individual (15 Min) Indy Blocks (10 Min) O-Line: Stance and Steps, Indy Blocks, Tennessee Drill, Baltimore Drill Indy Blocks (10 Min) Partner Up Down Block, Reach Block, Pull and Lead blocks Coach in central location Everyone at the same time

Group Periods Run Game Run Game Scheme Inside Run Game O-Line: Work scheme vs. Bags or Cans Inside Run Game Work plays you just practiced No WR’s or DB’s Correct mistakes quickly and be positive Assign a coach to run the scout team

Group Periods Pass Game Pass Game Scheme (10 Min) O-Line: Bootleg Drill, Pass rush drill 7 on 7/ Live Pass Rush (10 Min) O-Line: Pass rush vs D-Line Didn’t use much in youth football.

Team TEAM PERIOD Live; Quick whistle Work only on what you practiced Make corrections quickly and be positive! Scout team coach for back-ups! “It's not necessarily the amount of time you spend at practice that counts; it's what you put into the practice.”

Bird Dog Drill Works on Stance and Starts Coach in a central location Step, Freeze…Step, Freeze…Step, Run Thru Fire Step Down Step Pull Step Reach Step Coach in a central location After a couple weeks, this will be fast!

O-Line Stance Pointers Bend at the hips, not the knees. Sit back in a chair. Or, kids get this better…Poop in the woods! Squat Walks Heel-Toe Relationship

BIRD DOG

Individual Blocks Partner up, all kids at the same time. Coach in the middle.

Drive Block

Drive Block Warm Up Block Lead with your eyes Good squat position Solid base (wide feet) Short Choppy steps

Reach

Reach Block 6 Inch lateral step. Crossover Step Lateral step and contact Watch feet…make sure first step is lateral.

Down Blocks

Down Block This is a block usually made away from the play and down toward the next man inside. Against a penetrator, you should work on getting your head across. Use correct Step!

Pull and Kickout

Pull and Kickout Make sure the proper Pull step is taken. Step and point foot where you are pulling. Pick foot up and put it down behind your heel! Watch for kids just pivoting or stepping with improper foot.

Baltimore Drill

Baltimore Drill 2 Lines Make sure players finish their blocks! All players are Guards Working on proper pull steps First Guard Kicks out Second Guard, pulls and leads thru Make sure players finish their blocks! Simulates our 26 G.O. (Buck Sweep)

Tennessee Drill

Tennessee Drill 3 Lines: Guard, Center, Guard Down, Down, Kick-Out Drill Used on inside Traps Simulates our 31 O-Trap or 30 G-Trap Also works on our down blocks for the Tackles and TE’s

Before Pads! Great time to plan and teach drills! Play games! Take longer here: 20-30 minutes Teach a new drill each day Coach the coaches on the drill Play games! Soccer/Rugby Relay races Practice all drills you will do with pads

Scheme Vs Bags

Scheme Vs. Bags Essential, overlooked part of practice! Set up a defense (4-4, 5-3, 6-2) Pick just one per week. Use multiple groups Everyone participates!! Go fast; Coach on the run! Reps, reps, reps Run all the plays you will use in team. Be specific!

Half Line

HALF LINE Try to match up Solid vs. Solid players However the groups go in Full Backfield Tech, they go the same here. Live; Quick Whistle

Individual Periods Individual (15 Min) Indy Blocks (10 Min) O-Line: Stance and Steps, Indy Blocks, Tennessee Drill, Baltimore Drill Backs: Bag Drills, Cone Drills Ends: Work with O-Line Indy Blocks (10 Min) Partner Up Down Block, Reach Block, Pull and Lead blocks Coach in central location Everyone at the same time

Group Periods Run Game Run Game Scheme Inside Run Game O-Line: Work scheme vs. Bags or Cans Running Backs: Handoff Drill (reps) WR Stalk Blocking Inside Run Game Work plays you just practiced No WR’s or DB’s Correct mistakes quickly and be positive Assign a coach to run the scout team

Group Periods Pass Game Pass Game Scheme (10 Min) O-Line: Bootleg Drill, Pass rush drill Running Backs: Routes with QB’s WR’s: Routes with QB’s 7 on 7/ Live Pass Rush (10 Min) O-Line: Pass rush vs D-Line Backs and WR: 7 on 7, pass game with a defense; NO LINE

Team TEAM PERIOD Live; Quick whistle Work only on what you practiced Make corrections quickly and be positive! Scout team coach for back-ups! “It's not necessarily the amount of time you spend at practice that counts; it's what you put into the practice.”

Transitions Transitions are the time between drills and segments of practice. Water breaks are the time for coaches to set-up the next drill; preparing penny’s, cones, bags, etc. Coaches are all on the same page and focused Efficient practice and saves time
