Athena Malta’s Career Path How to become an Anesthesiologist

My Career Goals I want to become an Anesthesiologist by 2027 To get there, I will need to: Graduate high school by June 2019. Get accepted into UBC Get a Bachelors degree in biology Get accepted into UBC Medical School Get a degree in medical school Get accepted into a residency program in a hospital, and complete the 5 years

What is an Anesthesiologist? An Anesthesiologist is the person in the operating room who induces anesthetics to make the patient feel pain free for a certain amount of time. 1. Assess patients medical history 2. During surgery in OR monitor patient (Blood pressure, Heart rate, E.T.C) 3. Follow up with patient after surgery to make sure they are conscious and okay.

About my future career Anesthesiologist work in a hospital. The salary ranges form $45,000 - $65,000 for residents and $100,000 - $300,000 for general anesthesiologists. General hours per week can range from 60-65. It depends how many surgeries are in one day you can not predict general start and stop times per day

My job has a 0.4% chance of becoming automated This job has a really low chance of being automated because you have to deal with patients daily, think fast and complex under pressure and do paper work.

An anesthesiologist would be great for me because… I am calm and can control my self under pressure. I can also think fast under pressure. I am also really focused when needed.

I am not quite ready for this career, but I will get there! These are skills for the job I still need to learn: This is how I will get those necessary skills: To be patient It will come naturally when I am calm and understand the situation Preform well under pressure Stay calm and collected at all times

This is what appeals to me with this career… I like being busy and in a high paced location because I do not like being bored; I prefer to be really busy. I like to help people feel better when in pain because I am stopping or their hurting an making them feel better. I also like working with surgeons because I don’t get sick or irritated when I am around blood or looking at the inside of a body.

These are some things I find less appealing about this career… I don’t really like how you have really long hours because you don’t get much time to do anything else. I also don’t like to do paperwork which is a smaller part of this job but it still needs to be done.

Potential obstacles to getting this career The possible obstacles: My plan to overcome them: Not being accepted into a residency program. Apply to many hospitals all over BC with residency programs. Not doing well on the specialty exam. Study very very hard for it and make sure that I know everything that is on the test.

Potential obstacles to being successful within this career The possible obstacles: My plan to overcome them: Not many hospitals hiring Senior staff Anesthesiologists. Apply to many hospitals all over BC. Other anesthesiologists being too competitive Do the best that I can in every test or operation I do.

The training/education required for my career is: Graduation from high school A bachelor's or masters degree in a science Doctor of medicine degree Completion of a residency Pass on the specialty examination

I intend to go to The University Of British Colombia for that career Vancouver BC, Canada Biology and Medicine Bachelor in Biology and MD in medicine Bachelor degree- 2 years, MD- 4 years 95,294.96 for 6 years You first need a bachelor degree in a science (Ex. Biology). Then you need and MD in Medicine.

Here is where I can get that: A minimum of 70% in high school education A minimum of 70% in English 12 For Science (EX. Biology): There are very many options and it depends what courses that you choose to take. For Medicine: Year 1-MEDD 410 - Transition into Medical Education, MEDD 411 - Foundations of Medical Practice, MEDD 412 - Foundations of Medical Practice II, MEDD 419 - Foundations of Scholarship and Flexible Enhanced Learning. There is also a curriculum for year, 2, 3 and 4.

Financial Plan I am going to pay for my program: My parents are going to pay for my post secondary education. I can also get a job in grade 11 and 12 and throughout University.

High school courses required Grade 11 courses: Grade 12 courses: Math 11 English 12 English 11 Two sciences of your choice

Anesthesiologist’s are awesome!!! Helping other people with a problem that they either need or have wanted to get fixed. Helping people not feel any pain during their surgery. Working in a hospital setting where it is very busy.
