Introduction Trilogy “The Lord of the Rings” is one of the most popular fantasy masterpieces of our time. It includes three films: 1.The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring; 2.The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers; 3.The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. Let’s try to understand why this trilogy has won universal love and how it influenced modern world.

Plot Fellowship of the Ring The films follow the book's main storyline; however they omit some crucial elements of the novel's plot and include some additions to and deviations from the initial material. The hobbit Frodo Baggins and a Fellowship of the Ring begin a quest to destroy the One Ring. It’s necessary for the ultimate victory over its maker, the Dark Lord Sauron.

Plot The Fellowship becomes divided and Frodo continues the quest together with his loyal companion Sam and the treacherous Gollum. Meanwhile, Aragorn, heir to the throne of Gondor, and the wizard Gandalf unite to confront Sauron’s army in the War of the Ring. Legolas, Aragorn and Gandalf – The Return of the King

Director’s work Peter Jackson, the director, is known as admirer of Tolkien’s novels, on which plot of the trilogy was based. That is why Jackson tried to show the story as precise and picturesque as possible. It was an interesting director’s decision to film all chapters of the trilogy at the same time. Peter Jackson

Cinematography Cameramen had to work hard in order to show the difference in height of hobbits and humans. For this purpose they developed special set of platforms, which moved along with the cameras. Actual heights of actors

Cinematography The Shire Also worth mentioning beautiful shots of the New Zealand’s nature, which add majesty to films’ picture.

Makeup and costumes Of course I have to mention excellent costumes and makeup, which really make films’ atmosphere more magical and dreamlike. It’s insane, but sometimes it took up to 9 hours to put makeup on some actors!

Incidental music Howard Shore was hired in August 2000. He created many musical themes for various characters, cultures, and countries – for example, there are themes for the Shire, Rohan, Gondor and Fellowship of the Ring. Shore’s music truly conveys the atmosphere of the trilogy and really suits for such epic saga. Howard Shore

Acting Actors were picked wonderfully. You can actually see how characters change with the story; you believe the way they worry, love, hate and rejoice.

Acting They say that Viggo Mortensen, who played Aragorn, got so used to his character that in the conversation with Peter Jackson the latter would call him Aragorn and Viggo wouldn’t even notice it. Viggo Mortensen and Peter Jackson

Audience reaction and impact of the trilogy The first film got 4 Oscars, the second one – 2 Oscars and the third one – 11 Oscars, including the main award for the best film of the year. Films also won Golden Globe, Saturn, MTV Movie Awards and BAFTA. Kenneth Turan of the Los Angeles Times wrote that "the trilogy will not soon, if ever, find its equal". Oscars 2004

Audience reaction and impact of the trilogy Reviewers consider this screening to be the most successful. Many of them also say that Jackson’s trilogy raised popularity of fantasy genre. Audience reaction and impact of the trilogy Interesting fact: filming of the trilogy brought about $200,000,000 to the New Zealand economy. The New Zealand government even created position of a Minister for Lord of the Rings, who had to solve all the economic issues concerning the films. Conclusion Personally for me these films mean a lot – I saw the first film when I was very young and I’ve been a fan of fantasy genre since. And, in my opinion, this trilogy always will be appreciated for beautifully shown story about true friendship and the victory of good over evil.
