NARRATIVE TEXT

NARRATIVE TEXT Narrative text serves to inform readers by telling them a story. It can be real or fictional. All literature is narrative text.

CHARACTERISTICS OF NARRATIVE TEXT There is a development of the story starting with the beginning, middle and end. In every narrative text, there is setting (time and place) and there are characters. Also conflicts or problems exist.

CHARACTERISTICS OF NARRATIVE TEXT CONT. Conflict – 2 types Internal: is a struggle occurring within a character's mind. Example: usually some ethical or emotional question or could be a decision- making issue. External: the character is struggling with some force outside of him or herself Example: A war, or a chain breaking off a bike, or not being able to get past a road block.

CHARACTERISTICS OF NARRATIVE TEXT CONT. Theme A moral of the story or a lesson learned. Usually can be summed up in ONE word or a short phrase. Example: The theme of “Beauty and the Beast” is that things aren’t always the way they seem. People should not be deceived by appearances for beauty lies within. Example: The theme in “Finding Nemo” is trust. Marlin must learn to trust his son. It is his lack of trust in his son, that leads to the adventure. Example: The theme of “The Three Little Pigs” is taking your time to do something right pays off. The pig survived the wolves attack because he took the time to build his house correctly.

CHARACTERISTICS OF NARRATIVE TEXT CONT. Characterization – 2 types Direct: tells/directly states in the text what the personality the character has. Example: The patient boy and quiet girl were both well mannered and did not disobey their mother. Indirect: is the process by which the writer shows the character's personality through speech, actions and appearance.
