Plot - Comprehension Read page 162 in your Student Edition. Let’s look at this story map together. The plot tells what happens during a story. By looking at the story map and reading the boxes on 162, I can tell what Ashley’s problem is, important events in the story that tell how Ashley tries to solve her problems, and the solution to the story.

Let’s practice We will create our own story map together. Your job: Read “A Present for Mom” on page 163. We will figure out the problem, important events, and the solution.

Story Map – “A Present for Mom” Problem Important Events Solution

Read Aloud “The Just – Right Gift” Page 76 Realistic Fiction – Make believe but may have parts that are like real life. The characters may have the same kinds of problems that real people have. Let’s see if we can figure out the problem, important events, and solution as we read this story.

Robust Vocabulary - Allowance Gina had been saving her allowance for months so she could buy her mother a birthday gift. Allowance - if you get money for doing chores or helping at home, you get an allowance. What’s the word? Allowance When I was little, I got an allowance each week for helping to set the table. Would someone get an allowance for doing the dishes or for breaking them?

Robust Vocabulary - rosy Mom looked rosy and bright like the morning sun. Rosy – If something looks rosy, it looks pink. What’s the word? Rosy A rosy sunset fills the sky with red and pink colors. Which of these might you describe as rosy --- dark brown hair or a sunburn?

Robust Vocabulary Give an example of something you might do to earn an allowance. Show or draw an example of something that is rosy.

Grammar Action verb – a word that tells what someone or something does. A verb that tells about an action that is happening NOW is called a present-tense action verb. Gina finds a just-right gift. The present-tense action verb in the sentence is finds. The verb finds tells what someone – Gina – does now.

Identify Present-tense action verbs Danny and Gina go to a store. Gina shops for a birthday gift for Mom. They see many goods for sale. Gina waves a timer in the air.

At last, Gina sees a silky scarf. She wraps it with pretty paper. 5. She and her brother smell perfume. At last, Gina sees a silky scarf. She wraps it with pretty paper. Mom puts the scarf around her neck.

Independent Practice Write sentences with a present-tense action verb. You will share these with your partner. Remember it has to have something that is being done NOW.
