Solving Equations with the Variable on each side 9/27/16

Common Core State Standards Explain each step in solving a simple equation. Construct a viable argument to justify a solution method.

Simple Equations with Variables on each side. 1. Use the distribution property (grouping symbols) 2. Combine like terms 3. Then move the smaller variable to the other side using inverse Solve 2 + 5k + 3 = 3k - 6 – 3 Combine like terms 5 + 5k = 3k – 9 -3k -3k Move the smaller variable 5 + 2k = - 9 -5 - 5 Isolate the variable 2k = - 14 Isolate the variable 2 2 k = - 7

Solve each equation. Check your solution. 6 - b = 5b + 30 Send the smaller variable to the other side. 6 - b = 5b + 30 + b + b 6 = 6b + 30 -30 - 30 -24 = 6b 6 6 - 4 = b Check your solution. 6 - b = 5b + 30 (- 4 ) (- 4 ) 6 - (- 4) = 5(- 4) + 30 6 + 4 = - 20 + 30 10 = 10 The solution check is correct.

Solve each equation and check your solution. 4n - 8 = 3n + 2 Circle the larger variable then send the smaller variable to the other side. -3n - 3n n - 8 = 2 Solve the equation 5y - 2y = 3y + 2 +2y + 2y 5y = 5y + 2 Look at the variable pattern (they are both the same which will result in 0) No solution

Solving Equations with Grouping Symbols -3(x + 5) = 3(x - 1) Use the Distributive Property -3(x) -3(5) = 3(x) + 3(- 1) - 3x - 15 = 3x - 3 Send the smaller variable to the other side. +3x = + 3x - 15 = 6x - 3 2(7 + 3t) = - t Use the Distributive Property 2(7) + 2(3t) = - t 14 + 6t = - t Send the smaller variable to the other side. + t = + t 14 + 7t = 0

Solve each equation. 3(d - 8) = 3d A - 8 = 2A + 5 12 3

TOTD on 9/27/16 Solve each equation and check your solution. 2(4 + 2k) + 10 = k
