Structure of the Earth’s Atmosphere: By: Lena Lanza

The Troposphere The troposphere is the lowest layer of Earth’s atmosphere. The troposphere goes to approximately 12 kilometers high which in other terms is 7 miles.

The Troposphere All of the weather we experiences happens in this atmosphere. As the altitude is raised the air pressure becomes thinner, that’s why mountain climbers sometimes need bottle oxygen to breathe.

The Stratosphere: The stratosphere is 50 kilometers high. There are very strong winds in this atmosphere that moves from West to East which is known as the jet stream.

The Stratosphere: The ozone layer is also in the stratosphere and it’s what absorbs most of the sun’s harmful radiation. There are holes in the ozone layer which is a negative towards the living organisms on Earth.

The Mesosphere: The mesosphere is the coldest atmosphere of the six categorized. The temperature of the atmosphere is around -100 * C. The mesosphere is also known as the middle atmosphere..

The Mesosphere When meteors enter the mesosphere they burn up due to the friction of Earth’s gravity. Those shooting stars that we wish on are actually meteors burning, a group of meteors burning is called a meteor shower.

The Thermosphere The thermosphere is the thickest atmosphere out of the six listed. The air in this particular atmosphere is very heated.

The Thermosphere The temperature can raise up to 1500*C. The ionosphere and exosphere are two parts of the thermosphere.

The Thermosphere: Ionosphere When the sun’s rays reaches this atmosphere, the particles become electrically charge. The electrically charged particles are what make up the aurora

The Exosphere It is the outer layer of the Earth’s atmospheres. The Latin root ‘exo’ means outer. The atmosphere is very thin, air molecules can travel around without making contact with one another. The communication and weather satellites are in this atmosphere.
