Stock Person By Elizabeth Smith -A stock person, also known as a stock clerk, deals primarily with shipments and inventory. -This is a hands-on, entry-level position. A stock person mostly work in the stockroom in the back of house. -They don’t normally work on the sales floor, unless it is a small establishment where they double as a sales clerk or customer service representative. -Even though they work mainly in the stockroom, a stock person still deals with customers. -Stock clerks usually work and night during closed hours, but can also work during the day. So, their hours need to be flexible. -Experienced stock clerks are more likely to advance in a company than other entry-level positions. Many become supervisors or transfer departments within the store.

Duties Responsible for receiving, storing and moving merchandise Keep track of inventory with hand-held scanners Replenish merchandise on sales floor Accept and unload shipment, and ensure correct shipment are received Place orders when merchandise runs low Helps managers merchandise product on selling floor.

Education and Abilities High school diploma or GED Some stockroom experience often required Ability to use computers, hand-held scanners, lift heavy items Basic math and computer skills

Personal Qualities Good customer service Organized Hard working Interpersonal skills Take direction Detailed Flexible Motivated

Able to work nights, weekends, and holidays Locations Availability Anywhere and everywhere Mostly department store, grocery stores, and warehouses Top locations: Nashville, Houston, San Antonio, Columbus, and Dallas Able to work nights, weekends, and holidays Not much growth Current: 1,787,400 New openings: 46,500 8% growth rate decline 2006 - 2016 Not really sure why America Job Exchange said that these were the top locations for this particular job but I thought it was interesting enough to mention. This job is not expected to have much growth beyond this position in the next decade, especially since inventory control is becoming more automated. However, stock persons are often promoted because they demonstrate proficiency.

Salary Stock Clerk - Hourly at Publix $10/hr Stock Clerk - Hourly at Walmart Stores $9/hr Stock Clerk - Hourly at Kroger $8/hr Stock Clerk - Hourly at Walgreens On average, a stock clerk makes minimum wage or slightly above.
