Different forms of Government Foldable Set up

Forms of Government President or King? When people decide to form the social contracts that we call governments, they make many different decisions about how their government will look. President or King? Rule by few or rule by all? Hold elections? Where do the rulers get their power?

Democracy

Democracy Any form of government in which political power is exercised by all citizens, either directly or through their elected representatives. There are two kinds of Democracies… Direct! Representative!

Direct Democracy All citizens participate in government. There are no representatives in government: The citizens vote on everything! All citizens can create public policy if they want to.

Past Ancient Greece, Athens Present Switzerland Example Past Ancient Greece, Athens Present Switzerland

Representative Democracy Like direct democracy, all citizens participate in government People elect representatives who vote on laws for the citizens Representatives answer to the people through regular elections This is similar to the republic form of government Representatives are also usually held accountable by a constitution

Present USA Canada Germany Examples Present USA Canada Germany

Draw a Symbol

Fill in the blanks to review DEMOCRACY!

The two forms of democracy are __________ and ___________________. direct representative

In a democracy, all __________ participate in government. citizens

All citizens vote on everything in a ______________________. direct democracy

In a direct democracy, there are no ________________ in the government. representatives

In a representative democracy, the representatives answer to the people through ______________________. regular elections

REPRESENTATIVE DEMOCRACY! Now that we’ve talked about DIRECT DEMOCRACY! And REPRESENTATIVE DEMOCRACY! we can move on to forms of government where only one person is in control…

Monarchy and Dictatorship Autocracy

Autocracy A form of government in which political power is controlled by one individual such as a monarch, dictator, emperor, etc. We’re going to talk about two kinds of autocracy… Monarchs! Dictators!

Monarchy Rule by kings, queens, princes, and princesses… sometimes by other names, but always MONARCHS! Leaders usually gain their power because their parents were rulers too (power inherited). No Constitution Monarchy was the most common form of government until the 19th century, but it is no longer prevalent.

Examples Past United Kingdom, Denmark, and Japan Present In Absolute, the Monarch has absolute power over the state and government. Pope with the Vatican and Saudi Arabia (A) In Constitutional, the Monarch is sort of a figurehead, who is still subject to a constitution. Queen Elizabeth with the United Kingdom, Sweden, Japan, & Thailand (C)

Draw a Symbol

Dictatorship In a dictatorship, power is not inherited, but is acquired by force (military or political) Dictators have absolute control over the lives of their citizens and usually people are not allowed to voice their negative opinions

Examples Past Hitler/Germany Mussolini/ Italy Present North Korea’s leader Kim Jong Il

Draw a Symbol

We’ve talked about DEMOCRACIES… What else? We’ve talked about DEMOCRACIES… Democracy is… rule by the people!

What else? … and AUTOCRACIES… Autocracy is… … rule by one!

… but what other forms of government are there? What else? … but what other forms of government are there? What if, instead of everyone or just one person, a few people got together to rule a nation? Rule by Few!

Oligarchy

Oligarchy “Rule by few”, small group of people have power Power can be based on several things: Military strength (military) Family power (inherited) = Aristocracy Religious control (God or higher power) Oligarchies can often come from or lead to other forms of government (like autocracies)

Examples Past Sparta, Greece Russia Present Pakistan Fiction Examples Panam in Hunger Games A modern example of oligarchy could be seen in South Africa during the 20th century. Here, the basic characteristics of oligarchy are particularly easy to observe, since the South African form of oligarchy was based on racism. After the Boer War, a tacit agreement was reached between English- and Afrikaans-speaking whites. Together, they made up about twenty percent of the population, but this small percentage had access to virtually all the educational and trade opportunities, and they proceeded to deny this to the black majority even further than before. Although this process had been going on since the mid-18th century, after 1948 it became official government policy and became known worldwide as apartheid. This lasted until the arrival of democracy in South Africa in 1994, punctuated by the transition to a democratically-elected government dominated by the black majority.

Draw a Symbol

Theocracy

Theocracy “Theo” means “god” in Greek… so if a government is THEO-cratic that means it is ruled by… That’s right! A god or higher power! Leaders are usually religious leaders and society uses religious law to settle its disputes

Example Past Aztecs and Incas Present Iran is a modern theocracy that uses the holy Islamic book, The Qur’an, as its guide. Vatican City

Draw a Symbol

Anarchy

Then who makes and enforces laws? Anarchy No government at all… WAIT! Then who makes and enforces laws?

What do you think that would be like? Anarchy No government at all… In an anarchy there is no government to make or enforce laws. What do you think that would be like?

Draw a Symbol

There are so many forms of government! Wow! There are so many forms of government! And remember there are also combinations… What is government ruled by GOD and a FEW people called?

WHEW! We had better review… Time for some “A or B!”

Democracy A B Rule by everyone Rule by no one

Citizens elect people to vote All citizens vote on everything Direct Democracy A B Citizens elect people to vote All citizens vote on everything

Representative Democracy B Representatives are appointed Representatives are elected

Autocracy A B Rule by one Rule by few

Never have constitutions Monarchy A B Never have constitutions Power is inherited

Always protect freedom of speech Dictatorship A B Always protect freedom of speech Have total control

Power is always inherited Oligarchy A B Power is always inherited Come in many forms

Power taken through force Power from a higher being Theocracy A B Power taken through force Power from a higher being

Everyone does what they want Everyone follows the laws Anarchy A B Everyone does what they want Everyone follows the laws

Critical Thinking How do various nations define the rights, roles, and roles of citizens? On the blank sheet of paper, with your group members, come up with what you think the rights, roles, and responsibilities would be of a citizen within that government system

Representative Democracy Ex Rights: Natural Rights (Life, Liberty, Property) voting, freedom, choice(Declaration of Independence) Roles: Follow laws, vote (men and women), voice our opinion Responsibilities: go to school, pay taxes, follow the laws, driving classes, pay insurance

Processing After learning about the structure, symbol, and example countries for each different form of government, got back and evaluate the benefits (positives) of living under that form of government as well as the drawbacks (negative) of living under that form of government.
