FORMS of GOVERNMENT

Limited Governmental Power Citizens have rights Democracy: A system of government in which power is vested in the people, who rule either directly or through freely elected representatives. Direct democracy: is a form of democracy in which people decide (e.g. vote on, form consensus on) policy initiatives directly.

Limited governmental power (citizens have rights) Representative Democracy (Republic) – Where citizens elect representatives to make decisions for them. Example: USA

Limited governmental power (citizens have rights) Constitutional Monarchy: monarch (king or queen) is a figurehead. The government is actually run by elected officials There are many in the world, especially Europe.

Example: United Kingdom

Unlimited governmental power (citizens do what the government says) Absolute Monarchy: king or queen who has absolute power. Power is passed along through the family There are several in the world, especially in the Middle East

Example: Jordan

Example: Saudi Arabia

Unlimited governmental power (citizens do what the government says) Dictatorship: rule by a single leader who has not been elected May use force to keep control. Most restrictive for citizens There are several in the world
