Learning Targets I can analyze the causes and effects of the Second Industrial Revolution. I can identify and describe key people during the Second Industrial Revolution.

Big Picture Changes From 1800 to the present… World’s population increases 6-fold Majority of people begin living in cities Health and life expectancy improve Quality of life improves, but social class gap widens Immigration increases

Uses for Natural Resources Uses were found for oil Used to light lamps Gasoline wasn’t useful until automobiles were invented Efficient production of steel Railroad tracks Barbed wire Cans Brooklyn Bridge Skyscrapers (1st one was in Chicago)

Importance of Railroads Nationwide network of rail lines built. Many Chinese immigrated to work on them. Led to creation of time zones. Allowed people to access remote areas more easily. Allowed new towns and markets to form. Cornelius Vanderbilt owned many railroads.

Biltmore Estate Vanderbilt family used wealth to build it. Still the largest privately-owned house in U.S.
