Activity 75: Classifying Animals Challenge What are some differences and similarities among animals?

Useful Vocabulary: Classification Genus Invertebrate/ Vertebrate Kingdom Phylum/ Phyla Species

Getting Started What do (did) you collect? How did you sort your collections?

What is the Point??? The main purpose of this lab is to allow you to see how the introduced animals species you are studying are classified into the major divisions of the animal kingdom and to explore the diversity of animal life

Answer Analysis #1-3 in your notebooks Follow the procedure in your groups to classify the 18 animal cards. They should be in 4-8 groups Write down your groups in your journal. Roles: Seat 1 – Getter Seat 2 – Leader Seat 3 – Cleaner Seat 4 - Recorder Procedure (E-21) When you finish your groups please get Phyla cards from me and follow Part B Procedure. Answer Analysis #1-3 in your notebooks

How would you describe each phyla? Cnidarians Platyhelminthes Annelida Mollusca Arthropod Chordata

Why may it be useful to know the classification of the introduced species you are studying?

When you’re finished classifying… Pick up the Phyla Key and glue it into your notebook Analysis Questions 1, 2, 3 in your journals.

Analysis Answers: Some of your classification schemes will require a few changes, while others may have classified based on shape, habitat or some other feature not related to the Linnaean system. (which is based on physical structures) Biologists focus more on the development of internal systems and the sometimes unique structures associated with each. Characteristics used by biologists include: Development of tissue layers Circulatory systems Digestive systems Nervous systems Respiratory systems And skeleton types

Five invertebrate phyla are represented in this activity: Cnidaria Platyhelminthes Annelida Arthropoda And Mollusca
