The New Paradigm of Teaching and Learning Mathematics Maura Flanigan Valerie Valente April 4, 2017

Objective Together, we’ll explore and reflect on how teachers can make the biggest difference on student proficiency in math. Through exercises, reflections, and opportunities to learn and share with others, you’ll leave empowered to take a leading role in how math can be taught and learned in your school and district.

The Data This is actual data from a survey our students and teachers took on their thoughts on mathematics in our school district Please take 8 minutes to look through both the student and teacher data What do you notice? Please find something that you deem “significant” and post it on your poster paper.

Decision Time Which of the posters around the room has the most profound information?

PISA & Ten Questions for Mathematics Teachers PISA – Programme for International Student Assessment Every three years they test a sample of 15-year old students to measure how well their education system is preparing them for life after compulsory school Conducted in over 70 countries Covers math, science, and reading The test is not directly linked to school curriculum

PISA & Ten Questions (continued) Students complete a background questionnaire with the test This helps analysts understand factors that might influence student achievement PISA report takes the findings and organizes it into 10 questions that discuss what we know about mathematics teaching around the world and how it can help us in our classes

Gallery Walk Please begin at your assigned number. Write down your thoughts on the question. As we move, please add to other’s thoughts, share your own opinions, and give examples of how we can or are achieving these things in our classrooms already. Be specific We will come back to discuss at the end

Gallery Walk Findings Did anything stand out to you? Is one question more important than the other? Is there an area that we are addressing more than another? Is there anything you can take back to your classroom to use?

Growth Mindset vs. Fixed Mindset
