Where is Greece?

Important Geography Greece is surrounded by three seas: Aegean, Ionian sea, Mediterranean sea. They are not surrounded by the black sea but they often went there to fish. There are 6,000 islands but only 227 are inhabitable. One of the most important mountains to Ancient Greece was Mt Olympus. This is when the gods were thought to live. The valleys of crete the garden of greece.

Government? Religion? Most of the city-states were an oligarchy. Then they transitioned to a monarchy and finally. Democracy developed in Athens. But a lot of those democracies didn’t work out and turned back into oligarchy. The Greeks were polytheistic and worshipped a variety of Gods. Their lives were devoted to pleasing the gods and they made many offerings to the gods.

God of: Lightning Skies He was also the king of all the gods God of: Underworld Wealth He is married to persephone Goddess of : Hearth Family Domestic life She used to be apart of the olympians but was replaced by Dionysus God of: Sea Horses His weapon is a trident

Way of life Most greeks lived in small houses that were mud houses. They all wore tunics: women were long tunics underneath cloaks, while men wore short/long tunics. Women spent most of their time spinning thread and weaving cloth Breakfast: Bread dipped in wine with fruit; Lunch: Bread and cheese; Dinner: Porridge

Contributions The greeks influenced today’s civilization heavily in topics such as philosophy, architecture, art, math, science, and politics. They founded democracy, the olympic games, and styles of architecture and art.

Difficulties One of Ancient Greece's difficulties was farming. They didn’t have good soil and in 750 BC had little to no land to farm on. One of their social issues was the fact that women had no rights. They were married of at a young age and were able to partake in any important decisions their city-state was making.

Historical Figures Archimedes Hippocrates- “Father of Medicine” Plato Discovered the relation between water and volume Hippocrates- “Father of Medicine” He took superstition out of the medical Plato His writings discussed justice, equality, and beauty

3 Important things we should Remember... “Iliad and the Odyssey” because it revealed the values of the Ancient Greeks which were Honor, Courage, and Gifted Speech. The Persians War because it was when the Persian Empire attempted to expand their control into parts of Greece but Greek city- states united to fight and defeat the Persian forces and they ended up winning and maintained their independence. That Greeks are the one who most believe in many gods/goddess.

Conclusion Overall the Ancient Greeks were a powerful and influential civilizations, We enjoyed learning about their culture and religion. The most important things to learn about the Greeks was their founding of democracy, their achievements like the archimedes screw, and their architecture which is still present in western civilization today.
