William Shakespeare is one of the most famous world’s writers, poets and dramatists.

He was born on the 23d of April in 1564 in Stratford -on- Avon.

He was a boy of a free and open nature.

He learned to read and write at the Grammar School of Stratford.

At the age of 18he married a girl, Anne Hathaway.

Then he went to London.

First he became an actor, then he began to write plays First he became an actor, then he began to write plays. He performed in «the Globe» theatre, then in «The Swan».

The British Queen Elizabeth I was fond of Shakespeare’s plays.

His best years were devoted to the theatre.

He died on the 23d of April in 1616 at the age of 52. He was buried in Stratford Church.

Four lines are inscribed on his grave and are said to have been written by himself.

His literary work is divided into 3 periods: the Optimistic, the Pessimistic and the Romantic Periods.

His best tragedies are «Hamlet», «King Lear», «Macbeth», «Romeo and Juliet», «Othello»

His best comedies are: «Much Ado About Nothing», «Twelfth Night», «All’s Well That Ends Well», «The Comedy of Errors» and others.

The Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford shows his plays all the year round.

His ideas of love, friendship, humanism and patriotism are still very popular today.

Each year on the 23d of April Stratford arranges celebrations in honour of the poet’s birth.

Many phrases from his plays have become famous quotations: To be, or not to be, that is the question. Much ado about nothing. Brevity is the soul of wit. All is well that ends well. All that glistens is not gold. A sea of troubles. All the world’s a stage. Every inch a king. Wake not a sleeping wolf.
