Palatine District 15

Overview Community Consolidated School District 15 serves over 12,000 students in grades Pre-K through 8th in seven northwest suburban communities of Chicago. The district has 15 elementary schools, four junior high schools, and one preschool early childhood center and alternative public day school. District 15 has been a member of ISPIC since 2014, and accepts 1 doctoral intern each year. Stipend: $18,000 Interns attend new certified staff orientation at the start of the internship

Demographics Over 75 languages or dialects spoken by students and families in District 15 Over 20% of District 15 students’ home language is other than English, and the majority of that percentage speaks Spanish in the home. Of the students, 43% are White, 35% Hispanic, 16% Asian, and 3% Black. Approximately 42% are economically disadvantaged, 20% are limited English proficient, and 12% of the students receive special education services.

Intern’s Typical Week of Training The typical week includes 3 days at an elementary school and jr. high school, and 2 days at the district office. The internship can include one day at a high school setting for at least 20 days within District 211, which is also an ISPIC Partnering site in the Palatine area.

Intern’s Typical Week of Training Cont. The work in schools focuses on providing a range of professional services including consultation, assessment, data-based decision making, and prevention and intervention practices for academic, social, and emotional programming. The work at the district office focuses on district-level coaching for mental health supports and program evaluation. The intern works at the district office in the summer and responsibilities may include providing consultation and coaching to other schools, conducting program evaluations related to PBIS, Bully Prevention, RtI for English Language Learners, and assisting with special education and /or at-risk summer school programs

Intern’s Typical Week of Supervision Two hours of individual supervision occurs per week with Dr. Swanlund, an ISPIC program completer. Additional supervision is offered by Dr. Swanlund and other school psychologists throughout the week as topics and issues arise.

Laura Swanlund, PhD Licensed Psychologist and Licensed School Psychologist Holds a district-level administration position as the Psychologist and PBIS/RtI Coordinator

Supervision Supervision primarily occurs in Dr. Swanlund’s office. The office provides a secure location for discussing confidential information. Supervision notes are stored on the district’s secure googledrive domain.

Front Office The front office of the school and district office provide a safe and welcoming space for children and families Files are stored in locked file cabinets in locations out of sight from children and families

Office Space Interns share an office with another psychologist at the Elementary and Middle School. The intern has their own cubicle at the district office.

Materials Interns have access to a variety of testing equipment at the district office.

Equipment and Clerical Support The intern has access to a variety of office equipment in the school and district office, including printers and , copiers. The intern has a telephone and filing cabinets at each office. The intern is provided with a laptop computer that includes internet access across the district and their own personal login.
