Is the Flipped Classroom a Flop? Presented by: Joan Ray, Instructional Math Coach, Winston-Salem/Forsyth County schools Yvette Shore, Classroom Teacher, Davie County High School

What is the Flipped Classroom? A flipped class is one that inverts the typical cycle of content acquisition and application so that students gain necessary knowledge before class, and instructors guide students to actively and interactively clarify and apply that knowledge during class. https://vimeo.com/70893101 Content - delivered outside of the classroom, via videos, podcasts, and tutorials. Class time - spent on activities and tasks in which students can apply what they’ve learned to strengthen students’ skills.

How does it work?

Who’s doing it? Information from flipped classroom network

Why is it significant? Click on the TV !

What are the benefits? Materials can be found online. Students have control of pace-stop, pause, rewind, replay, review. Students are comfortable with social media and the internet. Responsibility for learning is directed back to students. Teachers can offer immediate feedback during activities and tasks. Teachers are available during classroom activities and tasks. Teachers have a variety of media from which to choose!

Students levels of learning from Revised Bloom’s Chart

What are the disadvantages? Students may not have internet access or a device. Work upfront for teachers to prepare. Time behind a screen rather than with people. Flipping is not for every student/every course.

What are the disadvantages?

Assessment in a Flipped Classroom

Types of Assessment Matrix Use the matrix to record your Teaching/Learning Activities and then brainstorm types of assessment types for measuring student learning Teaching Learning Activity Gathering Information Evidence Interpreting Information Evidence Record Keeping Evidence Communication Evidence Example: Online: Students watch videos on how to code qualitative data   In-Class: Students complete practice exercise as they learn how to code an interview transcript Walk around and answer questions /make recommendations as students practice coding I can see what they do not understand Can answer questions as they go Reflection to be completed at the beginning of the next class about what they thought was the most difficult part of coding, asking for unanswered question Groups triangulate coding and define categories – peer feedback Students will code their own interview transcript and demonstrate that they can code Click HERE to see expanded content for each component of the matrix

Reflections… Students HUNGER for feedback! Students are proud of their work! Students like being able to work ahead! If there’s a snow day, we’re still on pace! Absent students have no excuse!
