Presentation transcript:

Multicultural Societies What does Multiculturalism mean to you? Is Norway multicultural? Is your hometown multicultural?

Important Terminology Multicultural Monocultural Multilingual Multiethnic Multinational Citizenship Nationality Integration Assimilation

Multicultural Britain Approximately 8% of the UK’s population belongs to an ethnic minority.

Multicultural Britain Which groups make up the largest ethnic minorities in Britain? How has this changed over the past 20 years? Where do ethnic minorities live in the UK?

Multicultural USA ”We became not a melting pot but a beautiful mosaic. Different people, different beliefs, different yearnings, different hopes, different dreams.” Jimmy Carter

Multicultural USA About 33% of the total US population are part of a racial or ethnic minority group. 45% of children under the age of 5 are minority members. It is estimated that there are 9 – 12 million illegal immigrants living in the United States. Some claim there are as many 20 million. Hispanics are the largest and fastest growing ethnic group. Blacks and Asians are the second and third largest minority groups.

Multicultural USA The critical and fundamental point is that ethnic background and /or composition should NOT make a difference. It does NOT make a difference to me. The bottom line is that I am an American…and proud of it! Tiger Woods

Human Beings by Adrian Mitchell we all start out human we end up human human first human last we’re human or we are nothing What is the connection between this poem and multiculturalism?
