News from HQ

MESSENGER Mission E/PO http://messenger.jhuapl.edu/gallery/sciencePhotos/image.php?gallery_id=2&image_id=400 Date Acquired: October 6, 2008 Instrument: Wide Angle Camera (WAC) of the Mercury Dual Imaging System (MDIS) Of Interest: During MESSENGER's second flyby of Mercury, MDIS acquired a strip of high-resolution images obtained with each of the WAC's 11 different color filters. The graphic shown here displays the resulting enhanced-color mosaic and gives considerable detail about the images, how the mosaic was created, and the geologic features that can be seen. Currently, these images are the highest-resolution color images ever obtained of the Solar System's innermost planet, but not for long! On March 18, 2011, MESSENGER will enter into orbit about Mercury, and the mission's extensive, year-long science observation campaign will begin. That campaign includes capturing color images of Mercury's surface at higher resolution than ever before. To view the WAC mosaic without any overlying text labels, click here. Special thanks to Kathryn Powell, a summer intern student with the MESSENGER project, for contributing to the content of this graphic. Note: since the original creation of this graphic, the crater identified in the upper right with the label "young rayed crater" has been named Dominici. Click here to learn more about this recently named crater. Credit: NASA/Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory/Carnegie Institution of Washington

NSTA 2011 Updates San Francisco, California March 10–13, 2011 Booth staffing / Booth messaging Cross-forum tools (lists of workshops, products arranged by grade / standard) Lists provided early, so that booth staff can become familiar with them Shipping

NSTA 2012 Indianapolis, Indiana March 29–April 1, 2012 Abstracts due April 15, 2011 Based on community conversations, PS Conferences Team, and K-12 WG, want to move toward a more coherent, coordinated approach to sessions and booth.

NSTA 2012 - Recommendations Offer a smaller number of collaborative, thematic workshops from the community Advertise these to our networks before NSTA Booth used for conversations with attendees; listen to their needs, point them toward pertinent workshops /resources (booth tools include list of workshops with content-based threaded pathways identified, products arranged by standard / grade); experimenting in 2011 Schedule sharing sessions at booth (e.g., programs and products for elementary school teachers) Have a “NASA share-a-thon” / reception where we also encourage audience feedback Have passports; those who attend workshops get exit stamp and can redeem for NASA materials for their classroom (classroom sets of posters or bookmarks or …) Evaluate our efforts Thoughts? Other Ideas? Discussion Board on Workspace

Cross-Forum PD Plans PD of cross-community interest (questionnaires, surveys, conversations) Collaborative forum effort; each forum taking lead on different elements Formats will vary; focus on keeping these short and pertinent to the SMD E/PO community.
